FARGO, N.D. - The first session of the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Freestyle Championships went as expected, with the top high school wrestling stars competing without a blemish in their opening matches at the FargoDome on Thursday.
Returning 2007 Junior double champion Max Nowry of Illinois won his first match by fall over John Fischer of Pennsylvania, 7-0, 0:31 at 105 pounds.
Nowry is seeking to be a double champion for the second straight year, after claiming the Junior Greco-Roman title on Tuesday for his third career Junior title.
The other three returning Junior National freestyle champions also dominated their early action.
Jon Morrison of Illinois had a pair of technical falls at 119 over Andrew Stone of Ohio and Ty Martin of Iowa.
Nate Moore of Iowa had two dominant wins at 130 pounds, pinning Montana Gardner of Utah in 11 seconds then scoring a 7-0, 7-0 technical fall over Stephon Jenkins of Florida.
Mario Mason of New Jersey won a pair at 152 pounds, beating Shane Robb of Alaska, 1-0-7-0 and scoring a technical fall over Daniel Quinlan of Hawaii, 6-0, 6-0.
All three returning 2007 Junior National runners-up were unbeaten: Cody Pack of California (112), Cody Yohn of Colorado (171) and Eric Thompson of Iowa (285).
There are nine 2007 Cadet National champions who have moved into the Junior division this year, seeking a title at the higher age level. Eight of them were unbeaten during the session. They are Alan Waters of Missouri (112), Logan Stieber of Ohio (125), Josh Kindig of Pennsylvania (135), Dylan Alton of Pennsylvania (135), Andrew Alton of Pennsylvania (140), Brandon Rolnick of New Jersey (152), Jonathan Becker of New Jersey (189) and Kyle Caylor of Kansas (215) tech
2007 Cadet national champion Austin Meys of New York lost his first match at 171 to Spence Patrick of Idaho, 1-0, 2-3. Meys remains alive in the double elimination format.
There are two 2008 FILA Junior champions in the field, Stieber and Dylan Alton, and both are unbeaten.
The 10 champions from the 2008 FILA Cadet Nationals remain unbeaten. They include the Alton twins and Rolnick, plus Sean Boylan of Delaware (105), Steven Keith of New York (110), Anthony Ramos of Illinois (125), Tyler Beckwith of New York (171), Anthony Pike of Arizona (215) and Jeremy Johnson of Ohio (275).

Included are Stieber and Dylan Alton, plus Ryan Mango of Missouri (112), Luke Goettl of Arizona (125), Eric Grajales of Florida (130), Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin (145), Kendrick Sanders of Florida (145), Travis Rutt of Minnesota (171), Ethan Lofhouse of Utah (171), Brett Haynes of Missouri (189), Tyrell Fortune of Oregon (215) and John Hiles of Ohio (285).
Schmitt moved up from 140 pounds where he won the Greco title, and Rutt moved up from 160 pounds where he was also a Greco-Roman champion.
For the second straight year, there will not be a Junior Triple Crown winner, which will be awarded to any wrestler who wins USA Wrestling Junior national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle the same year. None of the 2008 USA Wrestling folkstyle champions were able to win the Junior Greco-Roman title on Tuesday. The closest to getting there was Minnesota's Justin Lavalle, who was a folkstyle champion and placed second in Greco-Roman at 125 pounds.
