Deitchler remains alive in repechage, Dantzler eliminated in Olympic Greco-Roman action

BEIJING, CHINA - Both U.S. wrestlers in the Olympic Games competition in Greco-Roman on Wednesday were beaten in their first bout at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium.
Dropping their opening bouts in the tournament were Jake Deitchler (Ramsey, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
In Olympic wrestling, only those who lose to a gold-medal finalist may enter the repechage rounds with a chance for the bronze medal. Deitcher has qualified for the repechage when his opponent made it to the gold-medal round. Dantzler was eliminated when his opponent was defeated in the semifinals.
Deitchler was defeated by 2006 World silver medalist Kanatbek Begaliev of Kyrgyzstan, 6-0, 3-0 in his first match.
Begaliev came out quickly, hitting a three-point headlock and a three-point arm throw to score a quick technical fall. A wrestler wins a period by technical fall if they are six or more points ahead of the opponent. In the second period, Deitchler took a 3-0 lead with a front-headlock turn in the final par terre position. However, Kanatbek scored a one-point reversal and a two-point exposure to tie it at 3-3. Begaliev wins the period by scoring the last point.
Begaliev won two more matches to reach the gold-medal finals. A key win was in the semifinals, when he defeated 2005 World champion Nikolay Gergov of Bulgaria, 1-1, 1-1, putting Deitchler back into the tournament.
Deitchler will face Armen Vardanyan of Ukraine in the first repechage match during the 4:00 p.m. session. In order two win a bronze medal, Deitchler will have to win two matches, beating Vardanyan and then Gergov. Vardanyan was a 2003 World silver medalist.
Deitcher is the 18-year-old phenom who surprised the world by making the U.S. Olympic Team. He is the first wrestler in 32 years to make an Olympic team coming out of high school.
In the qualification round at 74 kg/163 lbs., Peter Basci of Hungary defeated Dantzler in a three-period battle, 5-1, 2-2, 3-0. Basci came out strong, scoring a takedown early in all three periods.
In the opening period, Basci was able to turn Dantzler twice. In the second period, Dantzler was trailing 2-0, but hit a two-point turn from the top in the final seconds to tie the bout at 2-2. He won the period by scoring the highest point total. In the closing period, Basci scored a point on his feet, received a penalty point against Dantzler, and closed out the win by defending on the bottom and stopping Dantzler from scoring.
Basci won two more matches to reach the semifinals, including a win over 2000 Olympic champion Varteres Samourgashev of Russia. However, in the semifinals, Bacsi was pinned in the third period by Manuchar Kvirkelia of Georgia, putting Dantzler out of the tournament.
Dantzler is the veteran on the U.S. team at 37 years old. He has made five U.S. World Teams and achieved a lifelong dream by making the 2008 U.S. team.
