BEIJING, CHINA - Russia won both gold medals on the first day of Greco-Roman wrestling at the China Agriculture University Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Winning the gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was Nazyr Mankiev of Russia, who defeated Rovshan Bayramov of Azerbaijan in a spirit finals match, 4-3, 2-2. Mankiev won the first period with a two-point turn in the closing seconds, and captured the second period with a takedown as time ran out.
Mankiev's best previous finish was a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships. Bayramov was second in the 2006 World Championships and was a 2008 European champion.
At 60 kg, Islam-Beka Albiev of Russia defeated Vitaly Rahimov of Azerbaijan, 2-0. 4-0. Albiev had a lift in the first period for the difference, then hit a big three-point throw in the second period.
Albiev was a 2006 Junior World champion. Rahimov was a 2005 European champion.
In the first bronze medal match at 55 kg, Armen Amoyan of Armenia dominated the action, defeating Yagnier Hernandez of Cuba, 3-0, 5-0. Amoyan scored exposure points in both periods, and almost pinned Hernandez in the second period.
The other bronze medal at 55 kg went to Eun-Chol Park of Korea, who defeated three-time World champion Hamid Soryan of Iran, 1-1, 2-2. Park won the first period by scoring the last point on defense. A Park gutwrench with 10 seconds left gave him the margin in the second period. It was a rematch of the 2007 World finals, which was won by Soryan.
In the first bronze medal match at 60 kg, Ruslan Tiumenbaev of Krygyzstan dominated Roberto Monzon of Cuba, 8-0, 3-0. Tiumenbaev hit a nasty three-point front headlock to finish the first period, and won all the positions in the second stanza.
The other 60 kg bronze medal went to Nurbakyt Tengizbayev of Kazakhstan, who beat hometown favorite Jiang Shen of China, 4-1, 1-2, 3-0. Tengizbayev won the first period with a three-point throw and a penalty point against Shen for jumping the whistle from the clinch. Shen won the second when Tengizbayev was penalized for jumping the whistle, also. In the third period, Tengizbayev hit a gut wrench in the final few seconds to secure the victory.
