On July 19, Kelly Ward was body surfing in Ocean City when a wave picked him up six feet in the air and dropped him on his head.

The trauma initially paralyzed Ward, and also stopped his breathing and his pulse.

Thanks to the quick actions of the surf rescue technicians on duty, Ward was revived and transported to Maryland Shock Trauma.

This occured while Ward was vacationing with his family, wife, Tammy Ward, and his sons, Alex and Ben.

Kelly Ward was high school state champion twice at Kennedy High in Montgomery County, N.J., and a National Preps champ at Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J.

While wrestling at Iowa State University, Ward competed in the NCAA finals three times, finally winning a championship as a senior. He completed his collegiate career with a record of 126-10-2.

Ward has been involved in and a supporter of the sport of wrestling for years. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American.
