Repeat champions Taylor and Fortune lead Western Junior Freestyle Regional

Two Junior freestylers repeated as champions at the 2008 Western Junior Freestyle Regional from last year's competition, David Taylor of Ohio and Tyrell Fortune of Oregon.
Taylor battled Paul Garza of Arizona at 119, 2-2, 3-1, 6-0. Taylor, a double champion at 105 in 2007, was named Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. He was also a 2007 Junior Freestyle National champion and competed at the Junior World Championships for Team USA.
Fortune topped Gurjot Kooner of Canada, earning a technical fall, 7-0, 5-0. Fortune also claimed a double title with the win for the second year in a row. He was named Outstanding Wrestler for the Greco-Roman tournament.
The lowest three weight classes at the Western Junior Freestyle Regional saw three double champions named April 25 in Las Vegas. All three wrestlers also earned titles at the Greco-Roman tournament on April 23.
In the first final of the Western Junior Freestyle Regional, Carson Kuhn of Utah claimed a technical fall over Chris Bostic of Arizona, 6-0, 6-0, to earn a double title. Kuhn also won the Greco-Roman title at 98 lbs in the Western Junior Regional. Previously, Kuhn was a Cadet Nationals champion in 2007.
The gold medalists at 105 and 112 were also double champions. At 105, Ryak Finch of Arizona pinned Courtland Hacker of Colorado 44 seconds into the second period. Ryan Mango outlasted Efrain Aguilar III of Washington in a rematch of the Greco-Roman finals, 1-0, 0-7, 4-2.
Matt McDoonough of Iowa was the only other double champion at the Western Junior Regional. He defeated Kaleb Friedley of Missouri, 7-2, 6-0, to take home his second title of the week.
Three Canadians competed in championship bouts with one taking gold. Manjot Sandhu claimed first over Brent Haynes of Missouri, 3-0, 6-0, at 189. Kooner lost to Fortune at 215. At 285, Gurdeep Beesla was edged out by Toby Erickson of Montana, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1.
Two wrestlers from New York won their weight classes. Kyle Dake defeated Nick Dardanes of Illinios, 2-0, 1-0, at 130 and Shane Strumwasser took down Brandon Wilbourn of Missouri, 6-0, 6-1.
The 145 final featured two Washington freestylers. Derek Garcia earned a technical fall over Jim Belleville, 9-2, 7-0, to take the gold medal home.
At 125, Justin Lavalle of Minnesota pinned Ryan Jaunch of Illinois at 1:51 in the second period.
The other champions were Derek St. John of Iowa, Tyler Koehn of Kansas, and Ethen Lofthosue of Utah. St. John beat Donald Vinson Jr. of New York, 1-0, 6-0, Koehn topped Randy Larson of Oregon, 1-1, 7-0, and Lofthouse outscored Cole Shafer of Utah, 6-0, 1-0.
