Pennsylvania's Subbers ride atop Brute Scholastic Showcase

It's become standard operating procedure.

When Pennsylvania comes to the Brute Scholastic Showcase, they win. No ifs, ands, or buts.

That scenario played out again as this year's lone Pennsylvania entrant, the PA Subbers, dominated the event en route to yet another team championship.

The Keystone Staters picked up a 44-12 championship victory over upstart Indiana Gold in the final. The PA squad won the final eight bouts of the dual to win after trailing 12-10 early.

"One thing is certain, when you come to this tournament to win, Pennsylvania is the team you have to try to beat," NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has presented the event since its inception, as a sanctioned USA Wrestling event.

The Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center in York, Pa., played host to the event for the first time and drew rave reviews. From the tournament set-up, to ease of parking and notably, to fan-friendly concession and restroom facilities, everything went smoothly.

"We think the York Visitors & Conventions Bureau, as well as the Expo Center staff, did a remarkable job in making this a hospitable event," said Moyer. "The only thing inhospitable about the event overall was how team Pennsylvania treated its guests on the mat. They were outstanding."

The event, which started out in Battle Creek, Mich., and then moved to Delaware for the past few years, has only had one year where a team from PA didn't win it - the year they didn't bring a team.

Seven wrestlers went unbeaten (7-0) and three more were saddled with just a single loss during the dual meet, which attracted 21 teams from 19 states, and over 70 individual state champions and 180 state place winners.

Indiana Gold outlasted New Jersey Red to reach the finals for the first time in state history. The Indiana contingent was the strongest the Hoosier State had brought and included 11 state finalists.

Pennsylvania's team, while not loaded with state champions, did include a line-up predominately filled with state place winners. But Indiana wasn't going to just hand the trophy over to the reigning champs.

After Nico Megaludis gave the Subbers a 4-0 lead with a major decision over Casey Kenny, Indiana Gold rebounded with Brandon Wright's victory over Mitchell Port 5-3.

Indiana's Cashe' Quiroga gave the Gold a lead with an 8-2 victory over Jimmy Hughes, but then Cortlandt Choate, a state champion from Central Mountain and tournament outstanding wrestler, knocked off three-time state champion Josh Harper to give the PA contingent a 7-6 lead.

Back-to-back wins by Eric Roach and Sean McMurray extended the lead to 12-7, the biggest for Indiana, but that's where the mine went dry for the Gold.

Marshall Peppelman built a 5-0 lead over Indiana state champion Steven Sandefer with an early takedown and tilt and cruised to an 8-3 lead.

Another state champion, Joey Napoli, would pick up points in bunches in a 16-1 technical fall over Sam Bennett and the rout was then on.

Tony Dallago picked up a forfeit at 157, Michael Evans followed with a fall and Josh Smith with a tech fall.

At 194 pounds, PA runner-up Antonio Giorgio topped Indiana champ Marcus Shrewsbury 10-4, while Nick Ruggear and Evan Craig finished with a decision and a fall.

New Jersey edged Maryland for third in a re-match of an earlier Pool B Final.

Team Colorado and Indiana Gold shared the Team Sportsmanship Award, which is voted on by the tournament officials.

"The level of competition alone makes this event one of the best weekends of competition you can find and to have this event in a place like York is the best for many wrestling fans, teams and coaches," said Moyer. "For many, they may not think of York as a place to visit, but there's a lot of things to do for families coming other than just enjoy a great weekend of wrestling."
