KANSAS CITY, MO. - Team Pennsylvania won the key match-ups early in the bout to win the Freestyle portion of the 2007 USA Wrestling Cadet National Duals, presented by People-to-People.
The team score in the championship dual was Pennsylvania over the host Team Missouri, 53-22.
Pennsylvania used championship pool wins over Wisconsin, Kansas, and New Jersey. The road to the finals for Missouri included victories over Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Washington.
Early in this dual, Pennsylvania parlayed key wins at 105, 112 and 130, to team victory.
At 105-pounds it was Pennsylvania's Mitchell Port defeating Missouri's Alan Waters. Port tied Waters in both periods but Port claimed wins in each, one on a late caution and one a late tilt.
At 112, it was Tyler Watts of Pennsylvania defeating Cody Tyler of Missouri Watts conceded the first frame, 1-7 but in the second, won the match with a fall.
At 130-pounds was perhaps the highlight of the dual. The bout pitted, Dylon Alton from the Keystone State against Mac Bailey from the Showme State. The match was spirited and full of scrambles, counters, and a few points.
The first period went Alton's way, 5-1. The second went Bailey's way 0-5. The third, didn't decide a thing … Alton and Bailey were scoreless at the end of two minutes. Bailey won the coin flip but Alton won the match, as he expertly defended Bailey's advantage from the leg clinch
Alton's long battle led to a close, hard fought win for Pennsylvania. Alton's brother, Andrew, took another approach and won his bout with an early pin at 135 pounds.
The awards for the team placers and the medals for All-Americans have been handed out. Team Pennsylvania is your 2007 Cadet National Champions in freestyle.
New Jersey took third place, with a 41-28 victory over Minnesota 1.
