AKRON, Ohio - 2007 NCAA champions Cole Konrad, Jake Herbert and Trent Paulson competed in this event last year.
So did rising Greco-Roman star Spenser Mango.
The University Nationals served as the springboard to World-level medals for three of those four athletes last year. Mango won a World University gold medal while Herbert and Konrad won bronze medals at the World University Championships.
You can expect to see more of the nation's top young collegiate stars in the field for the 2007 University Nationals, set for April 19-22 in Akron, Ohio.
The University Nationals for freestyle and Greco-Roman will be held along with the FILA Cadet Nationals in both styles.
Finalists from the University Nationals qualify for the World Team Trials on June 9-10 in Las Vegas. Unlike past years, there will be no World University event for wrestling this year.
Herbert, who won an NCAA title at 184 pounds last month, could be on the mat for the University Nationals since he did not place in the top seven at the U.S. Nationals on April 7 in Las Vegas. The top seven finishers in Vegas qualified for the World Team Trials.
Twins Trent and Travis Paulson also fell short of a top-seven finish in Vegas and could be on the mat in Akron, looking to qualify for the World Team Trials. Trent Paulson, the 2007 NCAA champion at 157, is a returning University Nationals champion at 74 kg/163 lbs. Travis Paulson placed fourth at the 2006 World Team Trials.
Returning champion Franklin Gomez, a freshman at Michigan State, is another wrestler to watch at 55 kg/121 lbs. in freestyle.
Wrestlers 18-24 years old who are U.S. citizens and whose class has graduated from high school are eligible to compete at University Nationals. This event showcases future stars of the sport and is an important stepping stone for Olympic hopefuls on their path to winning medals for the United States.
Athletes can register online for a discounted entry fee. The deadline to register online is Tuesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. MST. To register online, click the link below.

The event is hosted by The University of Akron in its state-of-the-art intercollegiate Athletics Field House. The event will be sponsored by the Kent State University wrestling program, along with USA Wrestling/Ohio.
The FILA Cadet Nationals showcases many of the best high school wrestlers in the United States. Cadets are 15-17 years old (Born 1990-91, and 1992 with a medical certificate).
The top three place winners at the FILA Cadet Nationals qualify for their state's Cadet Nationals team above the state limit (and must adhere to all state policies).
This tournament had been hosted by the wrestling team at Northwestern University and held in the Chicago area since 1992. The University Nationals has only had one other site during its history, at Penn State Univ. in 1990 and 1991.
In the FILA Cadet Nationals, a number of top young stars may be entered in Akron.
Past Cadet National champions Nate Moore and Dylan Carew of Iowa are among the wrestlers who may compete in Akron. Moore won a FILA Cadet title in Greco-Roman last year.
All of the athletes who competed at the 2006 Accelerade Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D., are eligible to compete in this tournament.
Outstanding Wrestlers from the 2006 Accelerade Cadet Nationals were Ohio's David Taylor in freestyle and Missouri's Ryan Mango in Greco-Roman. Mango was a double Cadet Nationals champion last year and recently won the Cadet Folkstyle National title.
