Q&A With Olympian Quincey Clark

Quincey Clark Age 28 College: University of Oklahoma Age started wrestling: 16What's your goal going into the Olympics? Staying focused and being in the best shape possible. To outlast every opponent mentally and physically. What international experience do you have that has prepared you for this event? I wrestled in the world championships in '98 and '99 and the winter tours in 97-99. I was able to see some of the world's best wrestlers perform and has a chance to compete against them. How was your trip in Poddoubny? What did you learn from it? Poddoubny was enlightening. I realize that we are just as good as the Russians. It made me excited to go to the Olympics knowing I can win. Before a big match, what do you tell yourself to mentally reassure yourself that you're ready? I tell myself I am in shape. I am strong in the Lord. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. I tell myself that I am not afraid. Who has been the biggest influence on you during your wrestling career? Why? Kevin Dunn. He helped me realize my potential on the mat and in life. He helped me to start training in Minnesota with Dan Chandler. He let me know that my talents must be accompanied by persistence. How are preparations going for the Olympics? Are you doing anything different? Does this meet have a different feel about it? I am doing more high altitude training in Colorado. I will be doing more endurance training in Minnesota. What was the reaction back in your hometown? Have you been hearing from Old friend? I have gotten many calls from friends. They saw my picture in the paper in San Diego. I was put in the San Diego Hall of Champions. What has wrestling taught you? How do you view the sport? Wrestling has taught me many disciplines in life. Competition, persistence, focus and drive, humbleness, never expect to just be given anything, work for everything. Every great obstacle is just another great challenge and much more. What do you think of the coaching staff assembled for the Olympics? I think our coaching staff is going to do a great job. They are doing well so far and all the wrestlers respect our coaches.
