McKendree wraps up Blue Chip OCU Women’s Open with three champs

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – McKendree University, ranked No. 4 in the nation, sent four wrestlers to the finals of the Blue Chip OCU Women’s Open, with three wrestlers claiming top prize on Saturday.


Megan Black, a junior for the Bearcats, won the 130-pound bracket with a technical fall over Oklahoma City’s Carla Ponce in 2:40. Black is ranked No. 2 in the country at 123 pounds.


At 143 pounds, junior Olivia Seppinni, ranked No. 3, knocked off second-ranked Maggie Duoma of OCU with a 12-0 tech fall in 2:21.


The final Bearcat champion was Destane Garrick at 191 pounds. Garrick, who is unranked, picked up a win over No. 5 Paige Baynes of Lindenwood in the finals.


Sisters Tamyra and Tarkyia Mensah gave Wayland Baptist its two champions for the day.


Tamyra, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion at 69 kg, held on to her No. 1 ranking, tallying two technical falls and one win by fall before facing OCU freshman and 2016 Junior World Team member Rachel Watters in the finals. Mensah commanded the match, winning 9-3.


Tarkyia improved to 10-0 on the season en route to winning the 123-pound bracket. She defeated Rachel Archer of OCU, who is ranked No. 3 at 116 pounds, in a 10-0 tech fall.


Host Oklahoma City University produced one champion in top-ranked 130-pound wrestler Natalia Hinojo, who competed at 136 pounds.


Menlo College, Campbellsville University, Bacone College and Midland University each picked up one champion.
