FLASH: Gwiazdowski wins silver medal at Intercontinental Cup in Russia on Sunday

KHASAJVURT, Russia – Two-time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./New York AC/Wolfpack WC) won a silver medal at 125 kg/275 lbs. in Sunday’s action at the Intercontinental Cup in Dagestan.


Gwiazdowski was edged in the gold-medal finals by Batraz Gazzaev from Alania, Russia, by a 2-1 margin. Gazzaev was third in the 2014 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia, and boasts gold medals from the 2011 Dmitri Korkin International and the 2013 Moscow Lights tournaments in Russia, as well as the 2013 Copa Brasil in Brazil.


Gwiazdowski won three straight matches to power his way into the finals. He opened with a 3-2 win over 2015 Military World Championships silver medalist Dmitry Popov of Kazakhstan. Next, he dominated 2016 Junior World silver medalist Umar Israilov of Azerbaijan, 9-1. In the semifinals, he controlled 2015 Intercontinental Cup champion Anzor Hizriev of St. Petersburg, Russia, 5-1.


The USA won two medals at this year’s Intercontinental Cup, with Alan Waters (Columbia, Mo./Missouri Wrestling Foundation) winning a bronze medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. on Saturday.


2015 World bronze medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) opened his competition at 70 kg/154 lbs. with a win over Amazat Omurzhanov of Kazakhstan, 9-0. In the second round, he was edged by 2010 Youth Olympic Games champion Azamatbi Pshnatlov of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia, 1-1. When Pshnatlov failed to reach the finals, Green was eliminated.


Dropping his first match at 125 kg/275.5 lbs. was Bobby Telford (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC, who lost a 14-4 bout to Islam Bakhmudkadiev of Dagestan, Russia. Telford was not eligible for repechage when Bakhmudkadiev did not reach the finals. Telford’s final placement was ninth.
