Three returning World Team members advance as quarterfinals set at UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – 2015 Junior World champion Spencer Lee has advanced to the quarterfinals at 50 kg on the first day of the UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals at the South Point Hotel on Friday.
Other members of the 2015 Junior World Team who have also advanced are Mark Hall at 74 kg and Zahid Valencia at 84 kg. Lee and Hall were both Cadet World champions in 2014.
2014 Junior World Team member Anthony Valencia is also in the quarterfinals at 74 kg.
The 74 kg class includes Hall, Valencia, plus other stars including Logan Massa, Joe Smith, Larry Early III and Vincenzo Joseph. Hall and Massa recently competed at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City.
2016 NCAA champion Myles Martin, who won his title for Ohio State as a freshman this year, has reached the 84 kg quarterfinals.
Two 2015 Cadet World champions suffered losses during the first day. Cadet World champion Yianni Diakomihalis was defeated in the third round by Jaydin Eierman, in a wild 12-11 bout. He remains alive in the wrestleback. Cadet World champion Jared Verkleeren was beaten twice, losing to Cortland Schuyler on the championship side and Joe Lee on the consolation side.
The tournament is being broadcast live on Flowrestling and will complete Saturday morning.
The morning session begins at 9:00 a.m. The quarterfinals will be held on two mats, followed by the semifinals on two mats. There will be no break, as the tournament will then go into the medal rounds.
