LAS VEGAS, Nev. – There were nine wrestlers who repeated as champions at the Veterans Greco-Roman Nationals held on Friday at the South Point Hotel on Friday. The tournament grew from last year up to 107 entries this year in the Greco-Roman division.
The repeat champions this year were:
• Ernie Vasheresse (Half Moon Bay) – Div A 85 kg
• Brett Clark of TEAM FLUFFY – Div. B 130 kg
• Jason Goldman of Team JGold – Div. C 58 KG
• Aleksandr Serebrinnikov of Chicago Wrestling Club – Div. C. 63 KG
• James Kasser of Crush WC - Div. D 69 kg
• Kevin Pine of SNWA – Div. D 85 kg
• Hedj Nelson of Colville USA Wrestling - Div. E 69 kg
• Bruce Moe of Hillsboro - Div. E 76 kg
• John Hanrahan of US Wrestling Club/NYAC – Div. E 85 kg
As with all of these remarkable athletes, each of the champions have a different story which brings them to the podium at the Veterans Nationals this year.
Goldman and Hanrahan were champions, in spite of moving up to a new division this year.
Goldman, a Veterans World champion and multiple medalist, scored a pair of technical falls over Jeff Brewer of the Las Vegas Wildcats, 12-2 and 8-0.
“I am not getting any younger. I moved up in both USA and UWW for the World Championships as well. I am hoping to come up against a new set of guys. I wrestled a guy today I had never wrestled before. The same thing with the World level. I expect to see some different competition out there as well. It’s good to be in a new age group. It brings new challenges. I am excited about training and getting better,” he said.
Goldman enjoys all styles of wrestling. He will go both freestyle and Greco-Roman again here this year. He wrestles a lot of folkstyle as a high school coach. And a few years back, he competed in Beach wrestling.
“I coach a varsity program. I am always involved in some kind of folkstyle. I am at Greene High School in Greene, New York. We have had some good talent out of there. It’s a small program. I just took over the program this year. The numbers are small but its building, a good opportunity for me. It keeps me active and gives me some good guys to train with. It’s a good support system, and I am really excited about it,” said Goldman
Hanrahan, a double champion last year, has set a goal of winning the Veterans titles this year in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle. He has now won two of them, winning in Folkstyle in Iowa earlier this month and taking the Greco-Roman title today.
He won a four-athlete round robin and in his final match, he defeated former National Team Greco-Roman wrestler Craig Pollard of the Santa Monica Bay WC, 9-0. Pollard won the silver medal.
“It is not an easy thing. I added it up. I started wrestling in 1967 in second grade in Virginia. I have been wrestling for 49 years, going on 50. I tried the Veterans Nationals last year and was lucky enough to win the freestyle and the Greco. This year, I set a goal of winning the Folkstyle, Freestyle and the Greco. A few weeks ago, I won the Folkstyle out in Iowa. I was lucky enough to win the Greco here today. And we will see how I do in the freestyle tomorrow. I am inspired by a lot of these guys,” he said.
Hanrahan was the first All-American under legendary coach Rich Lorenzo at Penn State. He now trains at the Cooler, a sports facility in Alpharetta, Ga. founded by wrestling leader John Bardis.
“It’s an amazing facility. We train everybody. We have quite a few post-college wrestlers and Veterans wrestlers. Just a great group of guys. They are really doing great things,” he said.
For wrestling fans, there are often a number of very familiar names in the field, as past wrestling stars decide to give it a try at the Veterans level after years off from the sport.
And then there is Jake Clark, who was second in the 2016 Olympic Trials in Iowa City on April 9-10, who entered in Div. B at 97 kg. Alas, there were no entries for Jake to compete against in his weight class today.
But then there was Jacob Hey, a National Team Greco-Roman wrestler who last competed at the 2008 Olympic Trials. Now a coach, Hey made a comeback and won the 76 kg gold medal in Div. C.
And what about Rob Prebish, the respected youth Greco-Roman coach, who competed for the first time since 1993 when he was on the Senior level. He placed third at 63 kg in Div. C.
And so many of these athletes just love to compete, regardless of style. Gabe Beauperthuy, a former Senior level wrestler in Greco-Roman, continues to wrestle many styles. Beauperthuy was a champion last year at the Grappling World Team Trials and competed on the U.S. Grappling World Team. He was also second at the Beach Nationals last year. This time around, he won the gold medal at 130 kg in Div. C in a five-athlete roundrobin, beating a past Veterans Nationals champion and the eventual runner-up, Mark Trice of the SOAL Wrestling Club, 8-0.
“I felt good. I have been doing a lot of working out, a lot of lifting, trying to stay with the youth wrestling guys. It was a good tournament. I got to see a lot of my friends from my Greco days. It was kind of a reunion. It was fun. It is a nice thing that USA Wrestling does for us Veterans. I had four matches,” he said.
Beauperthuy will be competing in freestyle on Saturday, just like many of the other warriors who gave their most on the mats today.
