Kyle Dake selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Kyle Dake (Titan Mercury WC/Spartan Combat WC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on July 28, 2020.
Dake was featured in the main event of FloWrestling’s Dake vs. Chamizo on Saturday as he took on 2015 and 2017 World champion Frank Chamizo of Italy in a super match.
Dake, a two-time defending World champion at 79 kg, won the bout against Chamizo, who has recently competed at 74 kg. The two agreed to battle it out at 79 kg.
Chamizo scored first from a shot clock point, but Dake closed out the period leading on criteria, thanks to a late step out.
In the second period, the only scoring came from an entertaining sequence that resulted in exposure for Chamizo, then a reversal and gut wrench for Dake to put him up, 4-3. However, with less than 10 seconds remaining, Chamizo got the fans on the edge of their couches when he shot a single and nearly took down Dake for the win, but the American held him off for the victory, 4-3.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
