by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Dan Chaid (San Jose, Calif.) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Oct. 16, 2019.
Over the weekend, Chaid won a gold medal at 130 kg in Div. E in men’s freestyle at the Veterans World Championships, which were held in Tbilisi, Georgia.
To get to the finals, Chaid won Group B at his weight class, scoring an 11-0 technical fall over Mamuka Klajeishvili of Georgia and a forfeit over Riza Yildirim of Turkey. In the semifinals, Chaid beat Abdualla Zabakov of Kazakhstan, 6-3.
For the gold, he defeated Attila Szabo of Romania, 8-0.
It was Chaid’s second career Veterans World title, to go along with his 2000 Veterans World freestyle gold medal. He was the only American to win a Veteran World title last week.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
