Luke Luffman is selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
Luke Luffman (Urbana, Ill./ Illinois Regional Training Center/Illini WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 31, 2019.
After finishing as a Junior men’s freestyle champion and Greco-Roman runner-up at the 2018 USMC Nationals, Luffman was able to repeat as a men’s freestyle champion at 285 pounds and add a Greco-Roman title as well this year. Luffman was one of three athletes to double-up on titles in the Junior division. He was the only wrestler out of those three to be a repeat champion in either style.
Luffman went 12-0 across both styles and recorded eight technical falls. A 2018 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member, Luffman will attend the University of Illinois in the fall.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
