J’den Cox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/USOPTC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 16, 2019.
Cox put together an outstanding performance at the Yasar Dogu International last weekend, which was the final UWW Ranking Series event of the season in men’s freestyle.
Winning a gold medal at 92 kg, Cox went 4-0 over the weekend, winning all four of his matches by technical fall without surrendering a single point and outscoring the competition 43-0.
His opponents included 2018 U23 World champion Shamil Zubairov of Azerbaijan, two-time University World silver medalist Bendeguez Toth of Hungary, 2019 U23 Mediterranean champion Mohamed Fardj of Algeria and Abubakar Turgayev of Kazakhstan.
Cox has locked up the No. 1 seed for the World Championships, set for September in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
