Alyssa Lampe selected USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Alyssa Lampe (Sunkist Kids) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Dec. 23, 2019.
In her first competition in three years, Lampe made her comeback to wrestling in a big way, winning a Senior Nationals title at 50 kg in Fort Worth, Texas, over the weekend.
A two-time Senior World medalist, Lampe entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and dominated her way through the bracket. She opened competition with back-to-back 10-0 technical falls over Brooke Thurber and Natalie Reyna Rodriguez.
In the semifinals, Lampe faced National Team member Amy Fearnside, who she pinned late in the second period after going up 10-0.
Waiting for her in the gold-medal match was Victoria Anthony, who has two fifth-place finishes at the World Championships.
Anthony jumped out to a 6-2 lead at break; however, Lampe responded in the second period with a four-point takedown and used a half nelson to get Anthony to her back and secure the pin.
With the top-five finish, Lampe has qualified for the Olympic Team Trials in April at Penn State.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
