John Stefanowicz selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
John Stefanowicz (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Dec. 3, 2019.
Stefanowicz won gold at the Haparanda Cup last weekend in Sweden. After competing at the World Championships earlier this year at 82 kg, Stefanowicz bumped up to 87 kg in Sweden.
He began competition in a three-man round-robin bracket, where he took second to move onto the championship bracket.
There, he picked up a 3-3 victory on criteria over two-time Junior Nordic medalist Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden in the semifinals. For gold, the American took down Davyd Shadt of Ukraine in a decisive 6-2 victory.
The win gave him Stefanowicz first international gold medal.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
