by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on Sept. 11, 2018.
Hancock competed at 97 kg in the Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Cup in Warsaw, Poland, last weekend.
The Colorado native started the tournament with a 3-2 decision over 2015 Junior World champion Nikoloz Kakhelashvili of Italy before securing a spot in the semifinals after a 9-0 technical fall against Russia’s Maksim Safaryan.
In the semis, Hancock took on four-time defending World and Olympic champion Artur Aleksanyan of Armenia, who he defeated in only 27 seconds with a bodylock throw to a pin.
In the finals, the 2016 Junior World bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Senior World Team member shut out Olympian Nikolai Bayrakov of Bulgaria with a 7-0 win.
Next up for Hancock is the 2018 Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Oct. 20-28.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
