Kevin Pine (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on Oct. 2, 2018.

Pine represented the United States at the Veteran Freestyle World Championships in Skopje, Macedonia, last weekend, where he won a gold medal at 88 kg in the D Division, which is for athletes between 51-55 years old.

Pine, a now eight-time Veteran World medalist, claimed the first World gold of his career after a dominating day.

After a first-round 5-1 win over Azat Sheroyan of Armenia, Pine tallied back-to-back tech falls against Ayhan Ozdemir from Turkey, 10-0, and U.S. teammate Petros Petrosyan, 10-0, to move onto the finals.

For gold, the Vegas wrestler edged out Gyozo Lakatos of Hungary with a 1-0 decision.

Others winning medals for the Red, White and Blue at the Veteran World Championships included silver from Rudy James at 70 kg in B Division and bronzes from Jordin Humphrey at 70 kg in A Division, Daniel Lovell at 100 kg in B Division and Stephen Horton at 70 kg in D Division.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
