Ben Provisor selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Ben Provisor (State College, Pa./New York AC/Nittany Lion WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 8, 2018.
Provisor won medals in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at the 2018 Senior Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, last week.
In his primary category, Provisor snagged a bronze medal in the Greco tournament, bouncing back from a semifinal loss, where he fell to Daniel Gregorich of Cuba, who finished seventh at the 2017 World Championships.
The next day, two-time Olympian Provisor stepped in for the U.S. at 92 kg in freestyle as World and Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox fell ill as was not able to compete. By stepping up and competing, Provisor qualified the weight for the U.S. for the 2018 World Championships.
Provisor teched his way through the 92 bracket, which is six kilograms heavier than where he competed the previous day. In his final bout of round-robin action, the 2017 World Team member served up a 10-0 victory over Mexico’s Esdras Lopez to win gold.
His performance in both styles helped the U.S. to win Pan Am team titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
