Cody Brewer (Kansas City, Mo./University of Oklahoma) has been selected as TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 2, 2015.
Brewer defeated Dean Heil of Oklahoma State 13-12 in the 141-pound bout at the 50th annual NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday.
Trailing 12-10 late in the match, the Sooner standout secured the winning takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the third period to claim the victory over his Bedlam foe. Brewer was named one of two outstanding wrestlers for the event.
Brewer won the 2015 NCAA championship at 133 pounds with a dazzling underdog performance. He began the NCAA tournament as the No. 13 seed but won five straight matches including an 11-8 decision over Cory Clark of Iowa in the finals to win his first NCAA title.
Brewer will look to defend his NCAA championship at 133 pounds this season. He moved up to 141 pounds specifically for the NWCA All-Star Classic.
Each week TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Athlete of the Week please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
