Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Kennedy won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the Intercontinental Cup this past weekend in Khasvjurt, Russia.
The hosts selected the winner of the 60 kg/132 lbs. weight class for a special grand prize, a brand new Lada Granta Car, and Kennedy earned the special honor.
Kennedy defeated Murshid Mutalimov of Russia in the finals. Mutalimov was fifth in the 2011 Junior World Championships, and was a 2007 Cadet European champion.
Kennedy won three matches on the way to the finals, defeating three other Russian wrestlers in a row: Zekerhan Abakabov in his first match, Shambal Mizriev in the quarterfinals and Husein Shakhbanov in the semifinals.
Kennedy placed second at the 2013 U.S. World Team Trials. He was an All-American at Illinois, and now trains full-time at Michigan for the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club.
