Jesse Delgado (Gilroy, Calif./University of Illinois) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
The third-ranked Delgado upset top-ranked Matt McDonough of Iowa 9-4 at 125 pounds during the Big Ten dual meet this past Friday in Champaign, Ill. No. 2 Iowa downed No. 8 Illinois 25-12 in the dual.
Delgado's victory snapped McDonough's 42-match winning streak. McDonough, a two-time NCAA champion, had not lost a college match since falling to Delgado in a dual meet in December 2011.
Delgado followed with a 4-0 win over Northwestern's Dominick Malone on Sunday. The Fighting Illini beat the No. 17 Wildcats 24-10.
Delgado, a sophomore, placed seventh at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
