Brandon Ruiz (West Jordan, Utah/Grappler's Edge) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 27-Oct. 3.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Ruiz won a gold medal in the No-Gi competition at the FILA Grappling World Championships on Sept. 29 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Ruiz had to win four tough matches to win his first World gold medal in No-Gi Grappling. He had three decisions and a submission on the way to the title. Ruiz defeated Brazil's Maicon Nunes of Brazil, 6-0 in the semifinals, then stopped Mikael Knutsson of Sweden, 3-0 in the gold-medal finals.
Ruiz was a No-Gi World silver medalist in 2008 and 2009. He is the brother of 2005 Greco-Roman World bronze medalist Justin Ruiz, and was a Team USA member in Greco-Roman when he competed in that style.
Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
