Randy Lewis (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 12-18.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

The 49-year-old Lewis, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, returned to the mat for the first time since 1992 at the Northern Plains Regional on May 16 in Waterloo, Iowa. He won his first two matches before falling in the semifinal round.

Lewis opened with wins over James Reynolds and Trent Larrieu before he fell to two-time Northern Iowa All-American Moza Fay in the freestyle semifinals at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Lewis became the oldest past Olympic or World Team member to compete in a Senior-level wrestling event.

Lewis' return also generated its share of local and national media attention, and rekindled memories of one of the best wrestlers to ever wear an Iowa Hawkeye singlet.
