PONTEVEDRA, Spain – Nick Boykin is the lone U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to qualify for repechage at the 2022 U23 World Championships.
Boykin will compete against Luca Katic of Serbia in the 97 kg repechage on Wednesday morning. He will need to beat Katic, then beat Nitesh of India in order to reach a bronze-medal match. Should he win his two Wednesday morning repechage matches, he will face Igor Alves de Queiroz of Brazil in a bronze-medal bout on Wednesday night. Repechage begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday local time, which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
Boykin was defeated in his opening bout this morning by 2021 World silver medalist Alex Szoke of Hungary, 9-0. Szoke powered his way to the 97 kg finals this evening. Only athletes who lose to a gold-medal finalist are eligible for the repechage, which will determine the two bronze-medal winners at the weight class. I
Boykin is a two-time U.S. Senior Nationals champion and is competing in his third age-group World Championships. He attends Ohio State.
Three other U.S. wrestlers were eliminated and not eligible for repechage, after the wrestler who beat them Tuesday morning was beaten in the semifinals: Phillip Moomey at 60 kg, 2021 Senior World Team member Peyton Omania at 67 kg and 2022 Senior World Team member Benji Peak at 72 kg.
Moomey and Omania had reached the quarterfinals earlier in the day. Nurmukhammet Abdullaev of Kyrgyzstan, who beat Moomey, lost a 3-1 decision in his semifinal match. Kyotaro Sogabe of Japan, who beat Omania, fell in the semifinals by technical fall. Peak, who lost his first match to Irfan Mirzoiev of Ukraine, saw Mirzoiev lose a 7-1 semifinal decision.
Tyler Cunningham had been eliminated at 82 kg in the morning session, when his opponent was defeated during that session.
After the semifinals concluded, the Group One finals were held. Two U.S. wrestlers in Group One placed in the top 10 to score team points for the USA, Cohlton Schultz (7th at 130 kg) and Camden Russell (8th at 55 kg).
