NC State leads South Dakota State by a point after day one of Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational; four No. 1 seeds beaten in quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The team race is tight after the first day of a wildly competitive Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday.
NC State, which has four in the semifinals and three in the consolation, leads with 84 points, followed by South Dakota State, with four in the semifinals and four in the consolations, just one point back at 83 points. In third place with 80.5 points is Nebraska, followed by Michigan in fourth place.
NC State wrestlers in the semifinals are Ryan Jack (141), Ed Scott (157), Trent Hidlay (184) and Isaac Trumble (197).
South Dakota State is having a strong performance, with unseeded Tanner Jordan (125) in the semifinals, as well as Clay Carlson (141), Tanner Cook (165) and AJ Nevills (285).
Nebraska pushed the most wrestlers into the semifinals with five: Brock Hardy (141), Peyton Robb (157), Mikey Labriola (174), Lenny Pinto (184) and Silas Allred (197). Pinto, who was unseeded, defeated No. 4 seeded Trey Munoz of Oregon State in the semifinals, 5-4.
It was a really tough day for No. 1 seeds, as only five top seeds were able to advance into the semifinals. Four were defeated in the quarterfinals.
No. 1 seeds who did advance were Vito Arujau of Cornell (133), Sammy Sasso of Ohio State (149), Will Lewan of Michigan (157), Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech (174) and Parker Keckeisen of UNI (184).
Two of the quarterfinal wins over No 1 seeds were by quick falls. In the 141-pound quarterfinals, No. 8 Brock Hardy of Nebraska, pinned No. 1 Cole Mattin of Michigan in 39 seconds. At 165 pounds, No. 9 Tanner Cook of South Dakota State pinned No. 1 Carson Kharchla of Ohio State in 37 seconds.
The other two huge upsets were at 197 pounds, where No. 9 Andy Smith of Virginia Tech beat No. 1 Tanner Sloan of South Dakota State, 5-2 and at 285 pounds where No. 8 AJ Nevills of South Dakota State stopped No. 1 Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State, 5-2.
Mattin was eliminated with a loss in the consolations to No. 6 seed Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio State, 6-2. The other three No. 1 seeds won their consolation matches and advanced to Saturday.
The other No. 1 seed who was beaten was Mike DeAugustino of Northwestern, who dropped an injury default in his first match against Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State at 125 pounds. DeAugustino did not compete in the consolations.
2021 CKLV champions who have reached the semifinals are Dylan Ragusin of Michigan (133), Clay Carlson of South Dakota State (141), Mikey Labriola of Nebraska (174) and Kaleb Romero of Ohio State (184).
The semifinals will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, with the Championship finals set for 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time. All of the action is live on FloWrestling
