NICEVILLE, Fla. – Iowa and Penn State were the winners of the championship matches as the final day of the 2021 Collegiate Duals wrapped up on Tuesday evening. Iowa defeated NC State, 19-15, while Penn State defeated Arizona State, 29-10.

In the third-place matches, Cornell (18-15 over Virginia Tech) and Missouri (26-9 over Lehigh) picked up wins to wrap up an impressive couple of days in Florida.

In the red pool finals, NC State took Iowa down to the wire courtesy of several key performances from the middleweights. After Iowa took the first three bouts of the competition, No. 3 Tariq Wilson won at 149 pounds to set the stage for a big moment from NC State’s No. 23 Ed Scott at 157 pounds. Scott used a headlock to put No. 8 Kaleb Young on his back, finishing the pin and scoring key bonus points for the Wolfpack.

The Hidlay brothers were dominant at 174 and 184 pounds respectively – with No. 5 Hayden taking out Nelson Brands and No. 3 Trent beating Abe Assad – but Iowa was able to secure wins from No. 7 Jacob Warner (197) and No. 6 Tony Cassioppi (285) to finish up the dual meet win.

In the blue pool final match, Penn State was dominant against Arizona State, winning seven of the dual’s ten bouts. ASU’s No.1 Brandon Courtney (125) got the Sun Devils started with a major decision win, but the Nittany Lions kept momentum throughout the rest of the dual. All four of Penn State's top-ranked wrestlers – Roman Bravo-Young (133), Nick Lee (141), Carter Starocci (174) and Aaron Brooks (184) – posted wins. Bravo-Young and Lee both defeated wrestlers ranked in the top-15.

Perhaps the most notable win of the dual came from Penn State’s No. 3 Max Dean at 197, who scored a 10-1 major decision win with four minutes of riding time over No. 8 Kordell Norfleet.

In Cornell’s third-place match win over Virginia Tech, Vito Arujau – now down at 125 pounds – made a statement with a major decision win over No. 16 Sam Latona. Arujau started the year at 133 pounds but looks ready to make a run at the 125-pound title. Also of note for Cornell, No. 15 Jonathan Loew knocked off No. 9 Hunter Bolen with a 7-5 decision in sudden victory.

Missouri won eight of the ten matches against Lehigh to wrap up its Tuesday win. At 125 pounds, Noah Surtin continues to impress for the Tigers, knocking off No. 11 Jaret Lane, 10-4. Surtin defeated NC State’s No. 5 Jakob Camacho on Monday. Third-ranked Keegan O’Toole (165) wrapped up a 3-0 weekend with a 13-5 major decision over Lehigh’s No. 17 Brian Meyer.

Many of the schools competing in the Collegiate Duals will be in action over the holiday break at either the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) or the Southern Scuffle (Jan. 1-2). USA Wrestling will have on-site coverage of both events.
