2021 Collegiate Duals day one recap: Iowa, Penn State, Arizona State, NC State go 2-0 and earn spots in tomorrow’s finals

NICEVILLE, Fla. -- The first day of the 2021 Collegiate Duals wrapped up on Monday night, as 12 teams took the mat for premier college wrestling action.

 

Tomorrow’s finals matches are set in both the red pool and the blue pool:

 

Blue pool finals: Arizona State vs. Penn State

Red pool finals: Iowa vs. NC State

 

Below, you can find highlights from each match that took place on Monday, as well as complete results from Monday’s action.

 

Virginia Tech df. Hofstra, 35-5

• The Hokies won matches at nine of ten weights, including Dakota Howard’s upset at 197 pounds of No. 26 Trey Rogers (5-3 in overtime).
• In a key ranked matchup, No. 22 Connor Brady (VT) picked up a 6-3 decision over No. 28 Greg Gaxiola at 157 pounds.
• Hofstra’s win came at 149 pounds, when Michael Leandrou defeated Virginia Tech’s Kylan Montgomery, 3-1.

Missouri df. Binghamton, 33-6

• In the premier bout of the dual, Missouri’s No. 4 Rocky Elam took a 4-0 win over Binghamton’s No. 12 Lou Deprez.
• At heavyweight, Missouri’s Zach Elam also posted a win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 22 Joe Doyle, 4-0.
• Third-ranked Keegan O’Toole (Missouri) continues to look to be an NCAA title contender at 165 pounds – he posted a 13-4 major decision win over Brevin Cassella.
• Binghamton’s win came at 133 pounds, where Anthony Sobotker pinned Missouri’s Connor Brown.

Arizona State df. Hofstra, 42-4

• Hofstra got its lone win at 184 pounds, where Charles Small defeated Jacob Ortiz in a 12-1 major decision.
• Arizona heavyweight No. 3 Cohlton Schultz knocked off No. 20 Zachary Knighton-Ward with a 12-3 major decision to end the match.
• No. 6 Anthony Valencia (Arizona State) pinned Hofstra’s Mario Biancamano in the first 30 seconds of the 165-pound bout to, at the time, give ASU a 31-0 lead. ASU’s No. 3 Brandon Courtney also won via fall.

NC State df. Binghamton, 35-7

• Binghamton’s No. 12 Lou Deprez was impressive against No. 15 Isaac Trumble, posting a 10-2 major decision at 197 pounds.
• NC State’s No. 5 Jakob Camacho won via fall at 125 pounds, putting the Wolfpack up early. Binghamton’s Anthony Sobotker suffered an injury and was unable to continue in the third period, giving NC State a 12-0 lead out of the gate.
• In a ranked bout at heavyweight, NC State’s No. 28 Owen Trephan scored a 5-2 win over No. 22 Joe Doyle.

NC State df. Missouri, 19-12

• At 197 pounds, NC State’s No. 15 Isaac Trumble bounced back from a loss earlier in the day with a 5-3 win over No. 4 Rocky Elam, a win that helped propel the Wolfpack to victory.
• NC State’s No. 3 Trent Hidlay impressed at 184 pounds, posting a 13-5 major decision over Missouri’s No. 11 Jeremiah Kent.
• Another Wolfpack upset came at 157 pounds, where No. 23 Ed Scott used 1:42 of riding time to defeat No. 15 Jarrett Jacques, 3-2.
• Missouri began the match with a key top-five upset at 125 pounds, as No. 15 Noah Surtin knocked off No. 5 Jakob Camacho, 7-4.

Arizona State df. Virginia Tech, 23-13

• Arizona State’s No. 14 Michael McGee took an early lead over No. 4 Korbin Myers (Virginia Tech) and ultimately posted an 8-7 upset.
• In the premier matchup of the day, ASU’s No. 3 Brandon Courtney knocked off No. 16 Sam Latona, 8-4.
• For the Hokies, both Mekhi Lewis (174) and Hunter Bolen (184) won their matches via tech fall.

Cornell df. UNI, 29-7


• Vito Arujau made a return back down to 125 pounds, where he made a statement with a dominant 18-7 major decision over UNI’s No. 10 Brody Teske.
• UNI’s No. 4 Parker Keckeisen posted a standout win at 184 pounds, knocking off No. 15 Jonathan Loew with a 6-2 decision.
• Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis rolled to a major decision win over Colin Realbuto, 14-6.

Lehigh df. Central Michigan, 25-6


• The upset of the match came at 141 pounds, where Lehigh’s Connor McGonagle knocked off No. 7 Dresden Simon, 7-5 courtesy of a takedown late in the third period.
• In a battle of ranked heavyweights, Lehigh’s No. 8 Jordan Wood knocked off No. 9 Matt Stencel in sudden victory, 3-1.
• Lehigh’s No. 10 Josh Humphreys posted a statement major decision win over No. 19 Johnny Lovett.

Iowa df. Central Michigan, 44-0


• Spencer Lee (125 pounds) made his debut for the Hawkeyes, picking up a 17-0 tech fall win in just 4:19.
• Iowa’s No. 6 Tony Cassioppi won by injury default in one of the premier matches of the night against No. 9 Matt Stencel. Cassioppi was leading, 5-0 in the first period at the time of the injury.
• Abe Assad (184), making his 2021-22 Iowa dual meet debut, pinned Lehigh’s Ben Cushman in 2:22.
• Central Michigan’s No. 7 Dresden Simon led Iowa’s No. 2 Jaydin Eierman 11-2, but Eierman mounted an impressive comeback, winning 13-12.

Penn State df. UNI, 29-9

• No. 3 Max Dean was impressive for Penn State, posting a tech fall at 5:21 over UNI’s Noah Glasser.
• In perhaps the matchup of the dual, Penn State’s No. 1 Aaron Brooks defeated No. 4 Parker Keckeisen in a top-five showdown with a 3-2 decision.
• No. 1 Roman Bravo-Young pinned No. 31 Kyle Biscoglia at 133 pounds with 26 seconds left in the second period.

Penn State df. Cornell, 21-16


• Cornell's No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis went 2-0 on the day, picking up an 11-3 major decision against No. 22 Beau Bartlett.
• At 184 pounds, No. 1 Aaron Brooks was dominant, rolling to an impressive 15-3 major decision win No. 12 Chris Foca.
• Penn State heavyweight Daniel Kerkvliet sealed the win for the Nittany Lions in the final match of the evening, shutting out Cornell’s No. 18 Lewis Fernandez, 5-0.

Iowa df. Lehigh, 28-7


• Iowa’s No. 6 Anthony Cassioppi finished the night for the Hawkeyes with a standout 3-2 win over Lehigh’s No. 8 Jordan Wood. Cassioppi scored with less than 30 seconds left to pick up the win.
• Lehigh picked up an upset win at 149 pounds, as No. 30 Manzona Bryant took No. 8 Max Murin to sudden victory and scored a takedown to win, 7-5.
• Lehigh’s Josh Humphreys posted one of the most impressive performances of the day in Florida, posting an 11-2 major decision win over No. 8 Kaleb Young.
• No. 1 Spencer Lee (125) moved to 2-0 on the day for Iowa with an 8-0 win over Lehigh’s No. 11 Jaret Lane.
