Kyle Cochran (Paramus, N.J./Univ. of Maryland) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Jan. 4, 2022.
Cochran put together an incredible performance at the Southern Scuffle over the weekend, winning the 184-pound title as the No. 6 seed and representing the University of Maryland.
The Terp senior opened his tournament with back-to-back bonus-point wins over Northern Colorado’s Xavier Vasquez and Duke’s Conor Becker with a fall and major decision, respectively. From there, he knocked off higher-seeded athletes in each subsequent round.
In the quarterfinals, Cochran shut out No. 3 Jeremiah Kent of Missouri, 5-0, before a 6-4 victory over multiple-time All-American and second-seeded Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech. For the title, Cochran took on No. 1 Jon Loew of Cornell, who he defeated thanks to a big third period for a 4-1 win.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications and Social Media Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
