Mason Parris hand raise after winning the 125 kg gold medal at the 2026 Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France.

NICE, France – It was an excellent outing for the U.S. men’s freestyle side on Saturday at the 52nd annual Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France. Five Americans stood atop the medal stand at The Halle des Sports Charles-Ehrmann—Austin DeSanto at 61 kg, David Carr at 74 kg, Jacob Cardenas at 92 kg, Stephen Buchanan at 97 kg and Mason Parris at 125 kg.

Of the five champions, DeSanto was the most dominant of the bunch. He won five matches at 61 kg by technical fall, outscoring his opponents by a combined 53-2 mark. He opened with a 10-0 victory over fellow American Nathan Tomasello, and closed by topping Moldova’s Leomid Colesnic,12-2, in the gold medal match. The Hawkeye Wrestling Club product has hit his stride early this season with two international gold medals under his belt in the past three months.

Fellow HWC athlete Buchanan, a 2025 NCAA champion for Iowa, notched a gold medal at 97 kg in his first international appearance with three solid wins. He capped it off with an 11-0 technical fall over 2024 Olympian and two-time U23 World medalist Radu Lefter of Moldova.

Carr and Parris, the most credentialed U.S. athletes on this tour, were solid throughout the event. Carr, a 2025 U.S. World Team member, went 4-0 at 74 kg with a finals win over the experienced Seyfullah Itaev of France, 5-1. Parris, a 2023 World bronze medalist and 2024 Olympian, teched all comers at 125 kg save for young U.S. prospect Coby Merrill, who battled Parris to two decisions on the day.

Merrill was one-of-two silver medalists for Team USA. Utah Valley RTC’s Ed Scott went 3-1 on his run to the 70 kg silver.

At 92 kg, the three-time U23 World medalist Cardenas bounced back from getting pinned in round-robin play to emerge with a 4-1 record and the gold medal. Of his four wins, three came by technical fall, including an 11-0 score over returning champion and eventual bronze medalist Michael Macchiavello. Cardenas outlasted two-time U23 World medalist Ion Demian of Moldova in the finals on criteria, 6-6.

Five Americans battled back for bronze—Macchiavello, plus Alec Pantaleo at 70 kg, Terrell Barraclough and Will Lewan at 74 kg, and Zane Lanham at 97 kg.
