USA crowns seven champions in men’s freestyle to claim team title at Pan American U15 Championships

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – The United States won seven gold medals and 10 overall medals to claim the men’s freestyle team title at the Pan American U15 Championships on Saturday.

Claiming gold medal for Team USA were Jonathan Thompson of Iowa (38 kg), Brody Compau of Michigan (44 kg), Spenser McCammon of Indiana (48 kg), Mason Milsaps of Texas (57 kg), Riley Watts of Iowa (62 kg), Tommy Rowlands of Ohio (68 kg) and Daniel Jackson of Illinois (85 kg).

The USA freestylers had a combined 34-3 record for the day, with 29 wins by bonus points (technical fall or pin). The USA wrestlers were dominant in their victories, with four winning all of their matches by bonus points: Thompson, Davis, Milsaps and Rowlands.

Claiming the Golden Boot as the Outstanding Wrestler in men’s freestyle was Mason Milsaps, who dominated his opponents at 57 kg. Milsaps scored three technical falls (all in less than 1:30), then secured a 15-second pin in the finals against Mauricio Alvarado Espinoza of Mexico.

Coming home with silver medals were Ryland Wax of Ohio (41 kg), Lewis Davis of Arkansas (52 kg) and Sam Harrington of Pennsylvania (75 kg).

The United States won the men’s freestyle team title by 50 points, scoring 235 points with runner-up Puerto Rico at 185 points. Mexico placed third with 109 points, in the 11-nation field.

These 10 U.S. wrestlers also competing in the Greco-Roman competition on Thursday, and the USA won the Greco-Roman team title as well, with seven individual champions. All 10 U.S. men wrestlers won two medals at the U15 Pan American Championships,

Winning U15 Pan American double titles, with gold medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, were Thompson, Compau, McCammon, Rowlands and Jackson.

Team USA won the team title in all three Olympic disciplines at the U15 Pan American Championships, with the Greco-Roman team title on Thursday and the women’s freestyle title on Friday.
