Wick, Hidlay, Rademacher, Hendrickson win men’s freestyle gold at Pan American Championship; USA claims team title handily
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
MONTERREY, Mexico – The United States men’s freestyle team finished strong on the final day of the 2025 Senior Pan American Championships, adding seven medals to its haul, including four more champions, as well as the team title.
U.S. wrestlers who won gold-medal matches on Sunday night were Evan Wick (79 kg), Trent Hidlay (92 kg), Justin Rademacher (97 kg) and Wyatt Hendrickson (125 kg).
Hendrickson rocked the house in the last match of the finals, needing only 23 seconds to pin Richard Deschatelets of Canada. After getting four points on a blast double right off the whistle, Hendrickson was able to lock up and toss Deschatelets with a five point power drive, and finish off the fall. Hendrickson, a 2023 U23 World champion, had two pins and a technical fall in the tournament.
Rademacher was inspiring in his 5-4 victory over 2024 Olympian and 2023 Pan American Games silver medalist Arturo Silot Torres of Cuba. Rademacher took a 2-0 lead early, stretched it to 5-2 in the second period. Silot scored a takedown to make it 5-4 but could not score again. Rademacher, a 2024 U20 World bronze medalist, competes for Oregon State.
Wick and Hidlay finished off undefeated runs in their round robin competition.
Wick won all four of his matches with 10-0 technical falls, including his Sunday night 10-0 shut out of Victor Hernandez Luna of Mexico. Wick earned a gold on his first U.S. continental team.
Hidlay was also dominant, with three technical falls and a forfeit. In his final match, he took out Miguel Lavielle Ramirez of Mexico, 10-0.
Wick, Hidlay and Hendrickson were 2025 U.S. Senior Open champions, and will be competing for a spot on the Senior World Team at Final X at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on June 14.
Claiming silver medals after dropping their finals bouts were Joey McKenna (65 kg) and Ian Parker (70 kg).
McKenna’s match was controversial, to say the least, a 5-4 loss to Augustin Destribats of Argentina. With Destribats winning 1-0, Destribats locked up a front headlock so tight that McKenna lost consciousness. Destribats rolled him for two points and the referee called a pin. The USA immediately challenged as McKenna was revived. The jury awarded two points, but wiped out the pin. The match continued. McKenna scored on a step out and a shot clock point, then took a 5-4 lead with a takedown with 15 seconds to go. Destribats forced a step out with five seconds left to tie it at 4-4 with criteria. The USA challenge was denied.
Parker was defeated in the finals by 2024 Olympian Austin Gomez of Mexico, 11-0. They had been teammates at Iowa State. Gomez later wrestled for Wisconsin and Michigan in college, and switched to compete for Mexico.
Winning a bronze medal with an exciting comeback was Liam Cronin (57 kg), who edged Pedro Mejias Rodriguez of Venezuela, 5-4. Mejias jumped to a 4-0 lead, but Cronin scored a takedown, with a caution and one point penalty to make it 4-3, then won the match with a late takedown.
Cronin’s only loss was in the quarterfinals to 2024 Olympian Roman Bravo Young of Mexico, 10-0. Bravo Young was a two-time NCAA champion at Penn State and was a 2024 Olympian for Mexico.
The USA won the team title handily, with 10 medals, including seven golds, two silvers and one bronze. Team USA had 230 points, with Canada in second with 144 points and Mexico in third with 139 points. There were 17 teams in the men’s freestyle event.
On Saturday, the USA swept all three golds in the men’s freestyle weight classes contested, with titles from Jax Forrest (61 kg), Ladarion Lockett (74 kg) and 2023 World bronze medalist Zahid Valencia (86 kg).
Like Wick, Hidlay and Hendrickson, Forrest and Valencia have also secured their spot in Final X.
The USA also won the combined team title, for men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman, with Mexico in second and Canada in third. The USA took first place in all three disciplines.
