Legorburo, Peraza, Gallo Campos win age-group titles at Pat Shaw Memorial Cup in Guatemala
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
Three U.S. age-group wrestlers won gold medals at the Pat Shaw Memorial International Cup, held at the Sports Center Gymnasium “Erick Barrondo” in Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 31-June 1.
These athletes are with the Gladiator Wrestling Club of Homestead, Fla., part of a five-athlete delegation which competed. The tournament had competition in all three styles at the U15, U17, U20 and Senior levels.
Winning gold medals were Damian Legorburo of Homestead, Fla. (41 kg, U15 men’s freestyle), Leonydes Peraza of Miami, Fla. (44 kg, U15 men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman) and Melissa Gallo Campos of Homestead, Fla. (46 kg, U15 women’s freestyle).
Peraza won all eight of his matches combined in the two styles, with two pins, four technical falls, an injury default and a decision. His victories were against athletes from five different countries. He pinned Duglas Urrutia Ramos of Guatemala in 1:15 in the freestyle finals and went 4-0 in a five-athlete round-robin in Greco-Roman.
Legorburo won three straight matches to claim the freestyle title, with two pins and a 19-16 win over Franklin Calo Chocoj of Guatemala. He also won a silver medal in Greco-Roman.
Gallo Campos won five straight matches to claim her gold medal, including a 12-1 technical fall in the finals over Alejandra Salinas Betancourt of Chile. Two of her other victories were by pin.
Cleto Protti of Peotone, Ill. won U15 bronze medals in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman at 57 kg.
With just three boys competing at the U15 level, the Gladiator WC from the USA placed in the top five of the team standings in both styles
The event is held in memory of wrestling leader Pat Shaw of the United States, who introduced wrestling in Guatemala in 1947, when he was hired by the Guatemala Olympic Committee to prepare their wrestling team for the Central American and Carribbean Games in Guatemala in 1950.
