Everest Leydecker picked up a 10-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals at the U20 World Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.
SAMOKOV, Bulgaria - Follow the action from Arena Samokov on Day 4 of the U20 World Championships. Competition for Team USA is all women's freestyle as the 68kg repechage will go in the first session as will four new weight classes - 55kg, 62kg, 65kg and 76kg. Morning session begins at 10 a.m. local time (3 a.m. Eastern) with semifinals today set for 5 p.m. local time (10 a.m. Eastern). Medal matches will begin at 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. Eastern)

MFS 61KG Gold - Marcus Blaze (United States) tech. fall Ahora Khateri (Iran) 10-0. #
Passivity warning to Khateri at 50 seconds into a scoreless bout. Blaze drives Khateri to the zone and gets the one-point stepout. Khateri dropped to his knees before going out, but the stepout was still called. Khateri now on the activity period with 1:32 left in the first. Another stepout for Blaze, 2-0 lead and now another point for the inactivity. 3-0 with under a minute to go in the first. Another stepout for Blaze, strong underhook to drive Khateri out of the zone. 4-0 with 30 left in the period. ANOTHER stepout! 5-0. Blaze holds a 5-0 lead heading into the break.
Sweep single and Blaze walks it right to the edge and that’s another stepout and a 6-0 lead 30 seconds into the second period. Blaze snap, spins, changes directions and gets a takedown, then a trapped arm gut for the technical fall, the gold, the world title! 10-0 final! MARCUS BLAZE. WORLD. CHAMPION!!!
MFS 86kg Gold - Max McEnelly (United States) dec. Bozigit Islamgereev (UWW) 8-0 #
Passivity warning 51 seconds into a scoreless bout. High C attempt doesn’t quite get the leg and another passivity offered. Islamgereev on the activity period with 1:34 left in the first period. Clock expires and point for McEnelly on the inactivity. 1-0 with one minute remaining in the first. McEnelly on the attack and muscles Islamgereev out of bounds for the stepout. 2-0 with 40 left in the period. McEnelly passivity warning with five to go in the first. McEnelly leads 2-0 at the break. McEnelly in deep on a sweep, but Islamgereev slips away. Islamgereev with a good attempt, but McEnelly with the counter attack, grabs the leg, doubles off and powers through to the finish. 4-0 lead with 1:27 left in the bout. Islamgereev with a high-c attempt and McEnelly immediately counter attacks with a sweep, finishing another takedown and extending the lead to 6-0 with under a minute to go. Sweep single converts for McEnelly with 11 seconds left to make it 8-0. McEnelly wants the tech … in on the single, nearly has it but Islamgereev slips away. Clock strikes zero and Max McEnelly wins the title with an 8-0 win! MAX MCENELLY WORLD. CHAMPION!!!!
WFS 59kg Bronze - Yifan Zhu (China) dec. Aubre Krazer (United States) 5-3 #
Passivity offered 49 seconds into a scoreless bout. Zhu on a quick sweep, Krazer fighting it off hard. Head finally hits as the third supporting point and Zhu takes a 2-0 lead with 1:28 left in the first period. Krazer with the sweep single, lifts and tries to finish near the edge. Zhu defending well. Krazer takes it out for a one-point stepout. 2-1 Zhu at the break.
Krazer close to scoring but Zhu counters on the edge and crotchlifts Krazer through for two exposure. 4-1 Zhu with 1:50 left in the bout. Krazer defends a single, then stretches out Zhu and finally breaks the lock and comes around for the takedown. Zhu leads 4-3 with 1:00 left. Zhu goes right back to the same shot and Krazer goes right back to the same position she scored in last time. This time we get no improvement and we come back to our feet with 36 seconds left. Krazer drives Zhu out of bounds, but referee says grounded. U.S. challenges. Challenge lost. Point for the lost challenge. 5-3 Zhu with 14 seconds left on the restart. Zhu posts and defends and takes the bronze medal 5-3.
WFS 55kg Semifinal - Everest Leydecker (United States) tech. fall Tuba Demir (Turkiye) 10-0 #
Big battle with the handfight and underhooks in the first minute. Stoppage 56 seconds in as they are grounded out of bounds. Same position, this time Demir tries to armspin and Leydecker counters, throws in both the boots, but doesn’t get the takedown as Demir still had the arm trapped. Demir now on the clock with 1:07 left in the period. Leydecker really controlling the tie with the lefty underhook. Point for Leydecker on the inactivity. She’s backed Demir to the edge three times and all three, we’ve had it stopped on their knees in the zone. Not the next time as Leydecker powers Demir to the edge again for the stepout. 2-0 with :17 left in the first. Leydecker leads 2-0 at the break.
Demir is a three-time age-group bronze medalist, once at U17 and twice at U20. Leydecker again with the underhook, Demir drops to her knees before the zone, this time Leydecker slyly steps around to get the takedown on the edge for a 4-0 lead. Leydecker AGAIN with the underhook to the zone. Demir tries to whip over tie, but Leydecker drops to the near leg and finishes the takedown for a 6-0 lead. 1:15 left. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. To the edge. To the knees. Grounded out of bounds. Demir with her best offensive attempt of the bout and Leydecker spins behind for two more. 8-0 with 20 left in the bout. Front headlock, far ankle, go behind and boom, technical fall. Leydecker with a 10-0 shutout to reach tomorrow night’s finals!
WFS 65kg Semifinal - Momoka Kitade (Japan) tech. fall Daniella Nugent (United States) 12-2. #
Nugent controlling the overtie to the edge, but Kitade hips in and gets the stepout with 1:52 left in the first. Kitade hips and drops to the ankle again, but Nugent counters with a 2-on-1. Action to the edge and Kitade quickly goes behind with a two-point takedown to extend her lead to 3-0. The two towards the edge again, Nugent grounded and Kitade again trying to run behind. Stepout is eventually confirmed for Kitade. 4-0. Nugent counters a Kitade shot attempt for two on the roll through right before the buzzer. Japan (blue) challenges. After review, the call is changed to 2-and-2 and we go to the break with Kitade holding a 6-2 lead.
Single for Kitade at the edge and the takedown is confirmed. Now 8-2 for Kitade with 1:55 left in the bout. Kitade is so good with dropping to the leg from that angle out of the tie. Another stepout and a 9-2 lead. Kitade with more pressure on the edge, gets another takedown to extend the lead to 11-2 with under a minute remaining. Action grounded with 20 to go out of bounds. A stepout with seven seconds left ends it as Kitade defeats Nugent 12-2.

WFS 55kg Quarterfinal - Everest Leydecker (United States) tech. fall So Tsutui (Japan) 10-0 #
Leydecker picks up the first takedown over the 2024 U17 world silver medalist. Leydecker grabs the single and chops it down for another takedown to take a 4-0 lead. Tries to lock up the lace, but Tsutsui defends. Leydecker with a 2-on-1 drag, gets behind and follows Tsutsui to the mat for another takedown. 6-0 with 17 seconds left in the first. Leydecker leads 6-0 at the break. Leydecker cautioned by the referee, but white paddled by the chair. Leydecker controlling the ties with that effective 2-on-1 Valiant tie. Tsutsui tries to attack, but Leydecker counters for the takedown and ends it with a turn from an ankle lace. 10-0 tech and into the semifinals!
WFS 65kg Quarterfinal - Daniella Nugent (United States) fall Saga Linnea Svensson (Sweden) 5:49 #
Now up on A: WFS 65kg Quarterfinal - Daniella Nugent (United States) vs. Saga Linnea Svensson (Sweden). Nugent strikes first with a takedown 30 seconds into the bout. Svensson counters with a takedown on the restart. 2-2, 1:36 left in the first. Nugent with a four-pointer, but Svensson’s corner will challenge. Call is overturned, two-point action as Svensson was on her knee before she went over. 4-2 lead for Nugent on the restart. Nugent leads 4-2 at the break.
Svensson looked to have the takedown, but she stepped out first, giving another point to Nugent. Nugent leads 5-2 with 1:30 left. Svensson converts her next attempt to cut the lead to 5-4 for Nugent. 1:10 remains. Svensson takes the lead with a snap and spin. Svensson 6-5 with 43 seconds left and a fresh start. Nugent takes Svensson over to her back on the edge and gets the fall with 11 seconds left! Nugent into the semifinals!
WFS 76kg Quarterfinal - Tuvshinjargal Tarav (Mongolia) dec. Naomi Simon (United States) 10-4 #
Tarav pulls through Simon to score the first takedown. Tries to go lace, but Simon defends. Back to standing 26 seconds in. 2-and-2 sequence, but Tarav ends up on top and has Simon in trouble. Simon ends up bellying down and gets a fresh start with just over a minute to go in the first. Tarav leads 4-2. 4-2 lead for Tarav at the break.
Simon ties the score with a takedown and has the lead on criteria with 2:09 left. Tarav with a big double to drop Simon to her back for 4. Tarav now leads 8-4 with 1:30 left in the bout. Go-behind for Tarav extends her lead to 10-4 with :45 to go. Tarav gets the victory 10-4.
WFS 55kg R16 - Everest Leydecker (United States) tech. fall Evdoxia Papadopoulou (Greece) 10-0 #
Leydecker strikes first with a go-behind after Papadopoulou tries to go underneath. Leydecker with an ankle lace out of bounds for a quick 4-0 lead 40 seconds in. Leydecker with another go-behind, reaching for the far ankle and coming around for control 6-0. Back down to the ankle lace and boom! It’s over. 10-0 with two quick turns.
WFS 76kg R16 - Naomi Simon (United States) fall Rupinder Johal (Canada) 2:46 #
Johal catches Simon on the high-c attempt, but Simon avoids the trouble by driving through and coming out on top, but she gave up two in the process. Johal leads 2-1 with 1:30 left in the period. Simon with the snap and spin to take a 3-2 lead. Simon drops to the legs, locks up an ankle lace and gets a turn. Johal sits into the lace and gets a fresh start. Simon leads 5-2 with :44 left in the first. Johal tried to go underhook, but Simon whips her over and gets the fall with :14 left in the period!
WFS 62kg R32 - Shirin Takemoto (Japan) tech. fall Haylie Jaffe (United States) 12-2 #
Officials make Jaffe take off her knee sleeve before we even begin, confusing coaches already. Takemoto in on the attack quickly, dropping off to an ankle but Jaffe holds it off to get a fresh start. Jaffe counters a single leg with a crotchlift for two exposure, but gets caught on her back and gives the two right back. Takemoto with a gutwrench, and then another to build a 6-2 lead. They stay in par terre and Takemoto hits three more turns to end it 12-2.
WFS 65kg R16 - Daniella Nugent (United States) dec. Mukhayyo Narzilloeva (Uzbekistan) 12-10 #
Nugent strikes first with a takedown in the first 30 seconds. 2-0. Narzilloeva ties it up with a takedown with 1:38 left in the first. Narzilloeva with a dump to get two more and take a 4-2 lead. Nugent limp arms out of a scramble to tie the score 4-4, but take the lead on criteria with 35 left in the period. Period ends 4-4 with Nugent leading on criteria. Nugent with two on the edge to take an outright 6-4 lead. Restart with 2:31 left in the bout. Narzilloeva slow to get back to the center. On the restart, Narzilloeva finishes a sweep attempt for two and gets two more on a quick trap-arm. 8-6 lead with 1:53 left. Nugent locks up double unders, then throws it by and gets two. It’s 8-8 with 1:12 to go. Nugent with criteria. Narzilloeva back to that tricky sweep and takes a 10-8 lead with :46 left. Another restart as there’s nothing happening in par terre. Nugent with a takedown as Narzilloeva tried to go armspin. 10-10 Nugent leads on criteria with 38 seconds left. Nugent with a counter go-behind and a 12-10 lead with 15 to go. Restart. Nugent hangs on to take the 12-10 victory.
WFS 68kg Repechage - Ayse Erkan (Turkiye) tech. fall Jordyn Fouse (United States) 10-0 #
Tough draw in the repechage as Fouse gets returning U20 silver Erkan to start the day. Erkan strikes first with a two-point takedown on the edge in the first 30 seconds. Fouse hit for fleeing as well, goes par terre down 3-0. Erkan to her corner … something wasn’t sitting well in the system. Back to action with 2:13 left in the period. Blistering four-point double leg once action resumes. 7-0 lead. Another big double for a two-point takedown and now a 9-0 lead for Erkan. Fouse tries to go knee pick from a front headlock, but Erkan changes directions and drives Fouse out for the stepout and the 10-0 technical superiority victory. Erkan moves on, while Fouse is officially eliminated.
