TIRANA, Albania – The U.S. men’s freestyle team earned a fifth-place finish at 57 kg from New York native Max Gallagher on the final day of competition at the 2024 U23 World Championships.

Gallagher, a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, went 1-1 on Sunday evening at Tirana’s Feti Borova Sports Hall. He picked up a solid, 3-1, decision over Qingkan Xie of China in the repechage to get his crack at a bronze medal.

Iran’s Ali Momenijoujadeh got the better of Gallagher in the bronze medal match, securing three first period takedowns, including a four-point double leg, to take an 8-0 lead into the break. Gallagher and Momenijoujadeh stalemated in the second period with no points on either side.

Also taking the mat for Team USA on Sunday was 97 kg representative Massoma Endene, who needed two repechage wins to qualify for a bronze medal match. Endene, a two-time NCAA Div. III champion for Wartburg, began his day with an electric, 7-7, criteria win over Azerbaijan’s Aslan Abakarov. His second match was also decided by criteria, but not in the American’s favor. Ivan Prymachenko of Ukraine ended Endene’s run with a 2-2 victory.

The U.S. finished with two medalists in men’s freestyle—Jacob Cardenas earned silver at 92 kg and Mitchell Mesenbrink secured bronze at 74 kg. Two others, Gallagher and heavyweight Lucas Stoddard, finished with fifth place honors.

The men’s freestyle team title went to Iran, who collected 158 team points. Japan finished in second place with 102 team points and Azerbaijan brought home third place with 100 team points. Team USA came in fifth place with 73 team points, aided by a pair of seventh place finishes from Endene and Patrick Kennedy at 79 kg, plus 10th place points from John Gunderson at 86 kg.

The action from Albania continues tomorrow with the start of the 2024 Senior World Championships in the non-Olympic weight categories. Greco-Roman leads things off at 10:30 a.m. local time. For those following along live, Tirana, Albania, is located five hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
