NWCA Div. I Top 25 sees minimal shifts after first week of season
by Jason Bryant, NWCA
Manheim, Pennsylvania – The first week of Division I men’s college wrestling action saw 23 dual meets across the country, but just a handful of ranked programs were in action.
Penn State was idle and remained a unanimous No. 1 in the NWCA Poll, while the rest of the Top 10 was unchanged. Three top 10 teams were in action as No. 2 Iowa (1-0) topped No. 23 Oregon State, No. 7 Virginia Tech (1-0) beat Chattanooga and No. 9 Missouri (1-0) opened up with a Big 12 victory at Northern Colorado.
As one of the top road draws, Iowa beat host Oregon State 30-7 in front of over 4,200 fans at Oregon State’s Gill Coliseum. Northern Colorado drew a solid crowd at Bank of Colorado Arena, seeing over 2,400 fans come to Greeley to see the ninth-ranked Missouri come away with a 25-14 win.
No. 17 Illinois opened up with a 41-3 win at SIU Edwardsville, then-No. 20 Little Rock opened with a pair of home wins over Division II squads. Then-No. 21 Stanford opened up its season with 29-12 wins over both CSU Bakersfield and Utah Valley. Then-No. 25 Pittsburgh trounced Navy 35-3 to open its season.
Methodology: The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote and so on through to one point for a 25th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results.
