CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Returning champion North Central leads Iowa, by 14.5 points after the first day of the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) on Friday night. The NCWWC is the annual national championships for varsity NCAA women’s teams.
North Central ended the day with 127.5 points, with Iowa in second with 113 points. King was third with 104.5 points. Rounding out the top five were McKendree with 71.5 points and Colorado Mesa with 50.5 points. This order of teams is exactly the same as the rankings coming into the tournament.
Iowa, the first Power Five team in women’s college wrestling, is competing in its first national tournament.
North Central pushed 11 of its athletes into the semifinals, while Iowa has 10 wrestlers in the semifinals. King is next with eight semifinalists.
The semifinal round will be huge to determine the team titles, as North Central and Iowa will compete against each other five times. Based upon seeds, North Central is favored in three of the five pairings:
- Madison Avila (North Central) vs. Sterling Dias (Iowa) at 101 pounds
- Jaslynn Gallegos (North Central) vs. Ava Bayless (Iowa) at 109 pounds
- Brianna Gonzalez (Iowa) vs. Sydney Petzinger (North Central) at 116 pounds
- Marlynne Deede (Iowa) vs. London Houston (North Central) at 155 pounds
- Traeh Haynes (North Central) vs. Jaycee Foeller (Iowa) at 191 pounds
Both wrestlers gunning for a fourth NCWWC national title have reached the semifinals, Cameron Guerin of McKendree at 130 and Yelena Makoyed of North Central at 170. Makoyed was the 2023 USA Wrestling Women’s College Wrestler of the Year.
The other four 2023 national champions are also semifinalists, Maddie Avila of North Central (101), Jaslyn Gallegos of North Central (109) and Marlynne Deede of Iowa (155). Deede won her college title last year for Augsburg.
2021 NCWWC national champion Alara Boyd of North Central (143) and Felicity Taylor of Iowa (116) have reached the semifinals also. Both won their previous national titles for other colleges, Boyd at King and Taylor at McKendree.
The second session of the NCWWC included multiple rounds of consolations, including the “blood round,” which determined All-Americans in each weight class. North Central leads all programs with 14 All-Americans. Iowa and King have earned 12 All-Americans. McKendree and Colorado Mesa each have six All-Americans. There were 23 teams which will bring home at least one All-American.
Session III on Saturday morning begins at 11:00 a.m. CT, and will feature the semifinals, as well as the remaining consolation rounds, including the third, fifth and seventh place matches. The parade of All-Americans begins at 6:30 p.m. Central time, with the championship finals at 7:00 p.m.
