Garcia places fifth in women’s freestyle at Yasar Dogu International in Turkey

ANTALYA, Turkey – Marilyn Garcia of the Titan Mercury WC reached a bronze-medal match in women’s freestyle wrestling at 62 kg at the Yasar Dogu International on Friday.
Garcia dropped her qualification round match to three-time Senior World Champion and 2021 Olympic silver medalist Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan. She was pulled into repechage as Tynybekova reached the finals and was the eventual winner of the tournament.
Garcia advanced to the bronze medal match following a win by injury default in her repechage match,but fell to Individual Neutral Athlete Amina Tandelova, a 2023 U23 World silver medalist, to place fifth
Also at 62 kg, SaVannah Cosme of the Sunkist Kids dropped her first match to 2021 U17 World Champion and 2023 U20 European Championships bronze medalist Selvi Ilyasoglu of Turkey. Ilyasoglu fell in her following match by fall, eliminating Cosme from the tournament.
In Greco-Roman action in the Vehbi Emre International, Taylor LaMont of the Sunkist Kids, the lone U.S. Greco-Roman representative in Turkey, fell in his first match of the tournament to Mustafa Saglam of Turkey and was not pulled into repechage as his opponent failed to reach the finals. LaMont is a multiple-time age-group World medalist for Team USA
The Yasar Dogu and Vehbi continues on Saturday, with the first five men’s freestyle weight classes (57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg). The event ends Sunday with the final five men’s freestyle weights (61 kg, 70 kg, 79 kg, 92 kg, 125 kg). The USA has 14 athletes in the men’s freestyle field, including Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs and two-time World medalist James Green among the entries.
