Indiana, Iowa, Pennsylvania, California win 16U Freestyle Duals pools; Gold/Silver pool goes one round
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
HERRIMAN, Utah – Day one of freestyle at the 16U Freestyle National Duals was jammed with action, as the preliminary pools were completed by late afternoon, and the “color pools” which determine final placement already are underway.
Three of the top four seeds were able to win their preliminary pools, No. 1 Indiana (Pool A), No. 2 Iowa (Pool B) and No. 4 California (Pool D).
Indiana beat No. 8 Wisconsin 48-22 in the Pool A finals, winning 13 of the individual matches. Iowa was dominant in the Pool B finals, putting away No. 10 Georgia, 54-25, dropping only four contested matches. California also rolled through Pool D, beating No. 5 Utah Gold, 43-29 in the finals match, winning seven of the first eight matches in the meet.
Iowa is the returning 16U National Duals champion in freestyle, and already won the 16U National Duals in Greco-Roman on Thursday. In 2023, Iowa swept both styles at the 16U National Duals, something it is attempting to duplicate in 2024.
No. 6 Pennsylvania wrecked Pool C, slamming No. 3 Illinois in the finals, 55-15. The Keystone State’s finest won the first seven matches of the dual, with bonus point wins from Blake Hostetter (165), Kyle Scott (190) and Nathan Schuman (88), giving Illinois no chance to battle back. Overall, in their three Pool C bouts, Pennsylvania outscored their opponents 184-31 in combined team points.
Pool C was the only preliminary pool to need a true second place match, with Illinois scoring a dominant 57-16 decision over Washington to secure second place.
Joining Illinois as the other preliminary pool runners-up were Wisconsin (Pool A), Georgia (Pool B) and Utah Gold (Pool D), which also qualified them for the Gold/Silver Pool, which features the top two teams from the four preliminary pools.
The Gold/Silver Pool, which determines the top eight teams in the entire tournament, went one round on Friday night. The Pool is split into two groups of four teams, with each pool having three bouts.
Teams winning their first-round matches in the Gold/Silver Pool in Pool A were Indiana, which beat Georgia 49-27 and California, which defeated Illinois, 48-30.
Winning in the Gold Silver Pool in Pool B were Iowa, which put away Wisconsin, 45-28, and Pennsylvania, which stopped Utah Gold, 46-27.
None of the eight Gold/Silver Pool teams have been eliminated from reaching the finals, since Saturday morning’s next two rounds will determine which two teams will advance.
The other four color pools also started their competition, the Bronze/Copper Pool (Places 9-16), the Red/Blue Pool (Places 17-24), the Green Pool (Places 25-33) and the Yellow Pool (Places 34-39).
On Saturday morning, the color pools will complete their action, wrapping up their group competitions, and then finishing with cross-over medal matches for first place, third place, fifth place and seventh place.
Saturday’s session begins at 9:00 a.m. MT and runs through conclusion, which is estimated to end at 2:00 p.m. MT.
All of the action will be broadcast live once again by FloWrestling https://flosports.link/4bLp2ft
