HERRIMAN, Utah – Three of the top four seeded teams in the 16U National Duals in Greco-Roman won their pool competition on Wednesday, and have advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool on Thursday.
Overall No. 1 seed Team Iowa won Pool A. Overall No. 2 seed Utah Gold captured Pool B and overall No. 4 seed Illinois won Pool D.
Pool C was the only pool in which the top seed did not win. Overall No. 6 seed California knocked off No. 3 seed Minnesota Blue, 38-34, to move directly into the Gold/Silver Pool. The Gold/Silver Pool will feature the top two teams from each of Wednesday’s pool, all who are still eligible to win the team title on Wednesday.
No. 1 Iowa, the defending 16U Greco-Roman National Duals champion, had little problems in their three victories on Tuesday. In the Pool A finals, Iowa won the first six matches in the dual meet, all with bonus points, and went on to dominate overall No. 8 seed Washington 52-22. Iowa finished the dual with 11 bonus point wins, with pins from Jaxon Miller (157) and Brayden Koester (175) and nine technical falls.
Iowa opened the day with a 65-6 drubbing on South Carolina in the pool quarterfinals and a 46-31 win over Pennsylvania in the semifinals.
Utah Gold needed last-match heroics in both the semifinals and finals in order to claim Pool B. In the finals bout, in a see-saw battle with overall No. 7 seed Colorado, Utah Gold found themselves trailing 35-33 going in the last match of the dual at 150 pounds.
Utah Gold’s Noah Bull scored an apparent technical fall over Noah Garcia-Salazar of Colorado, in which Garcia-Salazar scored some points. The dual meet would have ended 36-36 with Colorado getting criteria. Utah Gold coaches challenged the final scoring move, and the jury took two points away from Bull, keeping the match going. Needing a pin or disqualification win for Utah Gold to win, Bull forced two late caution and two penalties against Garcia-Salazar, giving him three cautions causing Bull to get the needed five points.
The semifinals were equally scary for Utah Gold, which was trailing Missouri 37-33 going into the last match of the dual meet at 144 pounds. Ladd Holman of Utah Gold pinned Lake Waters in 1:35 for five team points, giving Utah Gold a 38-37 win over Missouri.
Illinois had a strong performance in the Pool D finals, stopping overall No. 12 seed Idaho, 55-21. Illinois won 13 of the 17 matches in the finals, including 11 with bonus points. Illinois’ only fall came from Colton Wyller at 94 pounds, with 10 technical fall wins.
California scored a 38-34 win over Minnesota Blue in the Pool C finals. California roared out to six wins in the first eight matches, including bonus point victories by Bailey Holman (165), Isai Fernandez (175), David Calkins (190), Noah Larios (215), Thales Silva (88) and Thiago Silva (94). Minnesota Blue roared back with four of the next five victories, but two California technical fall wins in the final four matches closed the victory.
The runners-up in each pool also advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, Washington (Pool A), Missouri (Pool B), Minnesota Blue (Pool C) and Oklahoma Outlaws Red (Pool D). Missouri, Oklahoma Outlaws Red and Washington had to win True Second Place Matches to advance to the Gold/Silver Pool.
The Greco-Roman tournament concludes on Thursday, with the “Color Pools,” with the Gold/Silver, Bronze/Copper, Red/Blue and Green/Yellow, which determines the final placements. The first session is at 8:00 a.m. MT, with the final session set for 1:00 p.m. MT.
