Returning champions Correll and Drury reach USMC Junior Greco-Roman Nationals quarterfinals

FARGO, North Dakota - 2023 Junior National Greco-Roman champions in the field have advanced to Saturday morning’s quarterfinals at the 2024 USMC Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman, Caden Correll of Illinois (106) and Landon Drury of Colorado (144)

Correll notched two technical falls and a pin. He opened with a 57-second fall over Maddox Martinez of New Mexico, then took out Geronimo Hernandez of Texas, 8-0 and Zebediah Tibbles of Oklahoma, 10-0. He will draw Elias Briones of California in the quarterfinals.

Drury powered through four rounds on Friday, opening with three technical falls. He stopped Oscar Doces of Oregon, 8-0, Giorgio Difalco of Illinois, 10-0 and Drake Hooiman of Nevada, 15-3. In the round of 16, Drury stopped Dillon Cooper of Kansas, 7-1. He will draw Joel Aguilar of Texas in the quarterfinals.

The session ended before the entire Round of 16 could be completed. All of the weight classes through 165 pounds have determined their quarterfinalists. The four heaviest weight classes (175, 190, 225 and 285) will contest their Round of 16 matches on Saturday morning.

Anthony Ruzic of Illinois, a 2022 Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion and a 2021 16U Nationals champion, has reached the quarterfinals at 126 pounds.

The three 2024 Junior freestyle champions who entered the Greco-Roman field remain unbeaten: Michael Rundell of Illinois (100), Dunia Sibomana of New York (113) and Angelo Posada of California (215). Rundell and Sibomana have qualified for the quarterfinals. Posada will wrestle his Round of 16 match tomorrow morning.

There are three 2023 Junior Greco-Roman runners-up who have reached the quarterfinals: Ezekiel Witt of Kansas (113), Kody Tanimoto of Texas (120) and Rhett Peak of Oklahoma (132).

2023 Junior Greco-Roman runners-up Cittadino Tuttle of Minnesota (215) and Shilo Jones of Idaho (285) will wrestle in the Round of 16 on Saturday morning.

 

Two 2023 Junior Greco-Roman runners-up were beaten in the session. Hunter Anderson of Idaho defeated 2023 runner-up Mason Brayfield of Missouri by injury default in the Round of 16 at 113 pounds. Easton Broxterman of Kansas beat 2023 runner-up Ryker Graff of Iowa, 11-1 in the second round.

Three of the 2023 16U Greco-Roman National champions who are entered have reached the quarterfinals: Caleb Noble of Illinois (113), Saxton Scott of Idaho (120) and Wyatt Medlin of Illinois (144). Another 2023 16U Greco-Roman champion,  Adonis Bonar II of Nebraska, will compete in the Round of 16 on Saturday morning.  

Other past 16U Nationals Greco-Roman champions to reach the quarterfinals are Aliaksandr Kikinou of California (165) and Pierson Manville of Pennsylvania (144).

Three past 16U Nationals Greco-Roman champions suffered losses in the session, Jeremiah Wachsmuth of Oregon (120), Lane Kleimann of Utah (138) and Brennan Carey of Missouri (215). Carey lost a second match by injury default and is eliminated.

No. 16 seed Zayne Reynolds of Missouri knocked off No. 1 seed Jaxton Packer of Idaho by pin in 52 seconds in the 126-pound Round of 16.

In a battle of twin brothers from Minnesota in the Round of 16 at 120 pounds, Titan Friederichs edged Joel Friederichs, 9-8.

2024 Junior National women’s freestyle champion Zao Estrada entered the Greco-Roman event at 113 pounds and was eliminated on Friday with a 1-2 record.

The Saturday morning session will feature the final four weight class in the Round of 16, and will then include the quarterfinals and the semifinals.

The 16U Greco-Roman Nationals begin at 3:30 p.m. today, and is scheduled to reach the Round of 16. All of the action is broadcast live on FloWrestling at https://flosports.link/4asFX5c
