Returning champions Regan, Stewart advance, 16U semifinals set at USMC Nationals

FARGO, N.D. -- The semifinals in the 16U division are set following the second day of competition at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Junior & 16U Nationals at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.
Nineteen of the 39 returning All-Americans reached the semifinals in the 16U division. Illinois led with three returning All-Americans. States that had two athletes in the group were Iowa, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. A total of 13 states are represented in the semifinals.
Two returning champions, Shamus Regan of Pennsylvania and Aaron Stewart of Illinois, both advanced to the semifinals after day two. Regan used three technical falls in the early rounds and two decisions in the round of 16 and quarterfinals through the tournament. Stewart, wrestling at 165 pounds,
Returning All-Americans that advanced to the semifinals include Hudson Chittum of Tennessee (88), Turner Ross of Minnesota (100), Case Bell of Indiana (106), Hayden Schwab of Iowa (106), Regan of Pennsylvania (113), Will Detar of Pennsylvania (120), Bruno Cassioppi of Illinois (126), Clinton Shepherd of Indiana (132), Austin Ellis of Utah (138), Travis Cardenas of Arizona (144), Jayden James of New Jersey (150), Gabriel Logan of New Jersey (157), Riley Johnson of Nebraska (165), Stewart of Illinois (165), Brayden Koester of Iowa (175), David Calkins of California (190), Cael Leisgang of Wisconsin (215), Alex Taylor of Ohio (215) and Joseph Favia of Illinois (215).
There were a total of five top-seeded athletes that did not reach the semifinals after the second day of competition in Fargo. Jensen Boyd of Indiana dropped a 4-0 decision to returning All-American Regan in the quarterfinals at 113 pounds.
There are four athletes that remain in contention to win the prestigious USA Wrestling Triple Crown Award: 144 – Noah Bull of Utah (144), Brody Sendele of Illinois (157), Stewart of Illinois (165) and Jonathan Rulo of Illinois (285).
At 120, top-seeded Gavin Landers of Iowa fell in the round of 32 to Austin Carfley of Pennsylvania, the No. 32 seed. Carfley reached the quarterfinals, but dropped a 10-10 criteria decision to No. 24 seed Van Smith of Oklahoma. Smith will face twelfth-seeded Liston Seibert of Ohio in the semifinals tomorrow morning.
Clinton Shepherd of Indiana brought down the No. 1 seed Dawson Youngblut of Iowa at 132 pounds, controlling the match throughout for the 9-2 decision. Shepherd is set to face Gavin Mangano of New York in the semifinal round.
In the 150-pound bracket, top seed Cooper Rowe of Minnesota fell in the quarterfinals to Maximus Dhabolt of Iowa, 10-7. At 285 pounds, No. 1 seed Andrew Olson of Minnesota fell in the round of 16 to Lucas Feuerbach of Iowa, 9-6.
Pennsylvania leads with seven semifinalists in six weights. Chase Karenbauer and Justin Farnsworth both advanced on the championship side at 100 pounds. Following closely with six semifinalists are California and New Jersey. There are three states with five semifinalists in Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. A total of 25 states are represented on the championship side in the semifinals.
The team race continued to excite, with Pennsylvania totaling 49 points for the lead. California and New Jersey follow with 42 point each, and Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana have each totaled 35 points.
