Women’s College Opens over the weekend: Three events hosted, five cancelled due to weather

Each week as appropriate, USA Wrestling will post the results from women’s college open tournaments from the weekend.


It was expected to be a busy weekend for women’s college wrestlers, but severe weather across the national caused the cancellation or postponement of five competitions. However, a number of top teams and individuals were able to wrestle at the Tornado Open at King, the Will Abele Open at Ursinus and the Golden Bear Invitational in Alberta, Canada.


Tornado Open at King

Sunday, Jan. 14

Summary – NCAA No. 3 King had five champions and a pair of co-champions as they hosted their annual Tornado Open. King champions were Samara Chavez (116), Maria Victoria Baez Dilone (130), Claire DiCugno (136), Yasmine Oliveira (143) and Cheyenne Bowman (155). Making the finals at 123 were King’s Virginia Foard and Montana Delawder, but they did not compete. NAIA No. 12 the University of the Cumberlands had a pair of champions, Chamira Cooper (170) and Maquoia Bernabe (191). Other individual champions were Odelia Lopez of NCAA Schreiner University (101) and Emily Mendez of NCAA Adrian College (109)

Will Abele Open at Ursinus

Sunday, Jan. 14

Summary: Led by four individual champions, NCAA No. 18 East Stroudsburg won the team title at the Will Abele Open with 55 points, followed by NCAA Elmira College with 39 points and NCAA No. 6 Sacred Heart with 33 points. Individual champions for East Stroudsburg were Olivia Klein (101), Mia Macaluso (123), Zoe Gress (130) and Jade Huerta (170). Elmira had three champions, Abby Duke (109), Zoey Lints (143) and Tayana Labady (191). Sacred Heart champions were Tatiana Walker (116) and Tayla Tildsley (155). The other individual champion was from Columbia’s club program, Arian Carpio (136).

Golden Bear Invitatiionl at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Saturday, Jan. 13

Summary: A pair of U.S. colleges travelled north to Alberta, Canada, for the Golden Bear Invitational, NAIA No. 4 University of Providence and NCAA No. 7 Simon Fraser. A number of unattached wrestlers from Simon Fraser also competed. Providence placed second in the team standings, behind champion USports No. 2 Calgary. Simon Fraser placed fifth. USports No. 1 Saskatchewan had the most champions with three: Sierra Mullin (53 kg), SueAnne Harms (56 kg) and Myah Phillips (83 kg). Champions from the University of Providence were Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp (59 kg) and Katelyn Lewis (76 kg). A champion from Simon Fraser was  Maddie Mackenzie (50 kg). Calgary had two champions, Grace Lew (62 kg) and Angelina Ellis Toddington (65 kg), while USports No. 4 Alberta also had two champions,  Aleah Nickel (68 kg) and Vianne Rouleau (72 kg)
