Stanford, with seven semifinalists, leads Indiana and Oklahoma after day one at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Led by seven semifinalists, Stanford took a 15.5 point lead over Indiana after day one of the Southern Scuffle on Monday.

Stanford led the pack with 97 points, followed by Indiana with 81.5 points. Rounding out the top five are Oklahoma with 77.5 points, Army with 64.5 points and Northern Colorado with 58 points.

Competing in Tuesday’s semifinals for the Cardinal are No. 1 seeds Nico Provo (125), Jaden Abas (141) and Daniel Cardenas (157), plus No. 2 seeds Jason Miranda (141) and Nick Stemmet (197), No. 3 seed Lorenzo Norman (174) and unseeded Peter Ming (285).

Indiana and Oklahoma are right behind with six semifinalists each.

Indiana semifinalists include No. 1 seeds Dan Fongaro (141) and DJ Washington (174), No. 2 seed Roman Rogotzke (184), No. 3 seed Graham Rooks (149), No. 4 seed Gabe Sollars (197) and No. 6 seed Tyler Lillard (165).

Oklahoma semifinalists include No. 1 seeds Giuseppe Hoose (184), Stephen Buchanan (197) and Josh Heinzelman (285), No. 4 seed Tate Picklo (174), No. 5 seed Conrad Hendrikson (125) and No. 6 seed Jared Hill (157) .

The only top seed who was beaten in the quarterfinals was Cael Carlson of Oklahoma, who dropped a 16-3 major decision to unseeded Gunner Filipowicz of Army, 16-3. Filipowicz will face another unseeded wrestler in the semifinals, Joey Bianchi of Little Rock.

Two of the No. 2 seeds were also defeated. At 133 pounds, Blake Boarman of host Chattanooga knocked off No. 2 seed Tyler Knox of Stanford, 11-4. At 285 pounds, Peter Ming of Stanford edged No. 2 seed Josiah Hill of Little Rock, 8-7.

Tuesday’s session begins with consolations at 11:00 a.m., semifinals and consolation quarterfinals at 1:00 p.m., with consolation semifinals at 3:00 p.m. The Championship finals and medal matches are set for 7:00 p.m., with all Eastern time.
