by Savannah Asmann, USA Wrestling
The U.S. men’s freestyle team saw three earn gold medals on the first day of competition at the Pan-American Championships in Acapulco, Mexico. Nick Suriano, Kyle Dake, and Chance Marsteller ended the night atop the podium. Action continues with the remaining men’s freestyle weights, as seven are slated to compete on Saturday.
Nick Suriano, competing at 61 kg, emerged victorious as a gold medalist. His journey to the top of the podium included strong wins against Joseph Silva of Puerto Rico, 3-2, and Jose Benites Vasquez of Peru, 12-2. Heading into the final round, Suriano led the match against Juan Lavat Cortez of Mexico before sealing the win with a pin at 4:47. With the gold medal performance, Suriano is now qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in State College, Pennsylvania, in April.
At 74 kg, Kyle Dake secured his fourth Pan-American Championships gold medal. He opened his tournament with a 10-0 win over Angel Cortes Bonilla of Panama. Dake continued his momentum into a 13-0 technical fall against Anthony Montero Chiniros of Venezuela. In his finals match, Dake was set to face Julio Rodriguez Romero of Dominican Republic, but his opponent forfeited the match, contributing to Dake’s campaign.
Chance Marsteller, wrestling at 86 kg, clinched the gold medal with an impressive win. Marsteller dominated Jorge Llano of Argentina with a 10-0 win, while Torreblanca Yurieski of Cuba withdrew from the following match due to injury. In his finals match, Pedro Ceballos Fuentes of Venezuela forfeited against Marsteller, and he secured gold.
