Hendrickson still leads in Div. I Most Dominant and Falls in NCAA awards standings; Henson tops Div. I tech falls
by David Lentz, NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships.
The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons.
For results to be counted for the awards they must come against opponents in the same division (i.e. Division II vs. Division II). Ties in the falls and tech falls categories are broken based on the aggregate time.
This week features the third standings of the Most Dominant Wrestler award, which features a 17-match minimum to qualify for the standings.
The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of team points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points per match are awarded as follows.
* Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)
* Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)
* Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)
* Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)
In Division I, Air Force heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson remains on top with 5.5 points per match. North Carolina State’s Trent Hidlay continues to hold on to second place at 4.76.
Division II remains a tight race with the top five holding consistent separated by just one point. Scott Joll from UNC Pembroke continues to lead the way with 5.43 points per match.
In Division III, Wartburg 133-pounder Joe Pins moved into sole possession of the lead this week with 5.21 points per match. Baldwin Wallace’s Michael Petrella trails closely at 5.19.
Wyatt Hendrickson also leads Division I in falls for the third week in a row with 14 in an aggregate time of 21:23. Ohio State’s Ryder Rogotzke and Indiana’s Gabe Sollars both trail by three.
In Division II, Scott Joll also stormed to the front with two falls this week for 13 in 24:58. Lander’s Anthony Yacovetti also has 13 in 26:48.
A pair of heavyweights have pushed their way to the top of Division III. Norwich’s Mason Sprinkel now leads with 22 falls followed by Timothy Glynn of Trinity (Connecticut) with 21.
For the fourth consecutive week, Division I tech falls are led by Lock Haven’s Wyatt Henson with 14 in 55:15. Lehigh’s Michael Beard has 14 in 61:41.
In Division II, Tiffin’s Max Shore continues to hold the lead for the fourth straight week with 12. He is trailed by three wrestlers with 10.
Division III saw no movement in the top four spots as Gavin Hollingsworth of Alvernia stayed idle at 19 followed by five wrestlers with 15.
