Gusfa, Bouzakis, Moe, Lucio unbeaten on day one of U17 action at Klippan Lady Open
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
KLIPPAN, Sweden – Four U.S. wrestlers are undefeated after the first day of U17 competition at the respected Klippan Lady Open on Thursday.
Those with an undefeated day include 2023 U17 World bronze medalist Jaclyn Bouakis of Pennsylvania at 43 kg, plus Francesca Gusfa at 40 kg, Kendall Moe at 46 kg and Morgan Lucio at 65 kg. All four won their only match of the day.
Bouzakis, Gusfa and Lucio are all competing in a round robin format, which will be completed on Saturday. Moe is wrestling in a two-pool format, which will also complete on Saturday.
Emma Chacon of Arizona (57 kg) and Alexandria Alli of Ohio (73 kg) both finished the day with 1-1 records. Chacon is still alive in Pool A of her weight class, and it is still possible she could wrestle for a medal on Saturday. Alli has wrestled both of her round-robin matches, but will not know which medal she wins until the final bout in her pool is wrestled on Saturday.
The U17 competition will be completed on Saturday morning in Klippan, with medals awarded at all weights. Starting at 1:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, the Senior division will begin, with preliminary action during two sessions. The Senior tournament will complete on Sunday. There are six U.S. wrestlers competing in the Senior division, all who are U20 age-eligible.
Klippan is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time Zone.
